Drop Front Desk Restoration |

This desk belonged to my wife's grandmother. My daughter inherited it when my mother-on-law passed away. At that time the desk was in very sad shape. It had been painted at least two times, chemically stripped at least once and was then a dark, opaque walnut color. Since any collectible value had been destroyed by the painting, I decided to strip and repair the desk. |

Most of the glues joints were in bad shape so I carefully dis-assembled the entire desk, hand stripped all of the individual parts, made new trim and internal support parts, then reassembled the desk and applied a red mahogany stain. |

The drop front, top and inside base are beautiful mahogany. I simply put a clear coat of polyurethane and let the natural color and grain show through. The sides, trim and legs are either popular or ash. I stained these with red mahogany and then applied clear poly. |

THe desk now sits in my daughters room where she uses it daily as her study area. With any luck, it will continue to be passed down for many more genereations. |
