DUANE
WILLIAMS:
We had moved away
from Doniphan and the first time I saw Duane he was perhaps 3 years old .
I recall that when we arrived he had a tricycle turned over and was
spinning one of the rear wheels. After
playing a while with my brother and Dwight I went over and said "hi"
to him and was startled when he began crying and ran to Aunt Nila. A few years later they visited us in
St. Louis and we all later teased
Duane a lot about that visit. He
didn't want to eat what the rest of us were having for breakfast and he kept
saying "I want some strawberry so die".
The more Nila and Mom tried to get him to take some milk and cereal, the
louder he got and his "I WANT SOME STRAWBERRY SODIE NOW, I DO!"
finally got results but he never lived it down.
As a young child he was as introverted as Dwight was extroverted.
However, as he grew the whine was replaced by a very personable and
thoughtful guy -- playing in the band, a good tight end on the high school
football team, the lead singer on a gospel quartet broadcasting weekly over
KSIM during his high school years. During
childhood he lost the vision in one eye from an accident, yet was able to
register 20/20 to get into the Navy by memorizing the chart -- "I thought
they had me when they said to read it backwards".
Later he became a "disk jockey" for KSIM and his pleasant
voice was well known throughout the boot heel area.
He married a lovely young lady and they were happily raising their
family when tragedy struck in the form of leukemia.
Duane died at much too young an age and was loved and deeply missed by
all who knew him.
