The Bird
Ishu
Mark Pritchard
Bec Paton
By the time I got within earshot of the venue, B.Hopps & Samson were spinning out tunes to a fairly healthy sized dance floor. I'm not too sure who's who, but we had a dj spinning tunes, and mc down the front of the dance floor with a wireless mic, subtly hying it up amongst the crowd, and a trumpet player inserting a few live notes now and then. Very nicely done.
Then we had the producer Ishu, on keys and sampler and the like. On the slower, more hip hop to dancehall tip. Things only got more interesting towards the rear of the set when some of the Foreign Dub (or is it Basslines Crew) mcs got up on stage to sing and rap over the top. Some interesting moments.
Then, possibly the highlight of the night, Mark Pritchard, aka Harmonic 313 or whatever, on final scratch. Already impressed me immensely djing at the Pivot gig, again tonight traversing some similar grounds with deep, dark and heavy tech-dub-step into wicked dnb. Krust's Warhead. Woo!
The Bird, with guest Luke Dubs from Hermitude to make up for their missing double bass player. Quite possibly an improvement, a double bass always struggled to be heard above the live ruckus anyway. I had forgotten the slightly goofy new look of Simon on the key-tar. It's lovely to see these lads back in action, it's been a while. And my poor old bones know it, struggling to keep up with live dnb business this late into the night. The new Hermitude/Bird hybrid wobble basslines rule! Much fun to be had, the time, it just flew.
When the main show was over, I had a peek into the back room to sample the lovely Bec Paton and her wild, eclectic beats. A lovely way to end the night.
DNBBQ rocks. Big ups Foreign Dub.
