Darren Hanlon
Pikelet
Des Miller

Wednesday night down in Enmore. Or Marrackville, where ever the hell I am, I don't really know. Not having a record out or a song on the radio at the moment, the turnout down these remote neck of the woods on a school night was surprisingly healthy. No, it wasn't sold out, nor was it packed. But I don't think they could have hoped for much better.

Opening act Des Miller appeared as a five piece on guitars, bass, drums and keyboards. A kinda subtle country twang to their rock'n roll sound. The most memorable thing about the set was his flatmate's black balloons, facepaint, and a guest singer.

Pikelet, again Evelyn Morris alone on stage with acoustic guitar, accordion, glock, floor toms, and many more toys at her disposal, all looped and played back. A neater, more refined performance than the last time I saw her at the Hopetoun. Vocals jarr a bit when reaching for the higher, louder notes, but largely it was a good performance, impressing quite a few in the crowd.

Darren Hanlon on stage tonight supported by that Cory fellar on trumpet and keys, and Evelyn taking on the drummer role. A fun, relaxed show. Of course. Personally I was getting a bit tired of some of the rambling banter, I've heard about Eli Wallach too many times already. I wouldn't want a Darren Hanlon show without the funny stories, but tonight I wish he'd tone it down a bit and get on with the music. And the music was great. Extra memorable was Evelyn singing Fire Engine and getting a few lines in in the new tune, and the three of them standing round the one mic for a quiet little ditty. Lovely, as always.
