First band Tennis kicked off to a shambolic start. Something about missing soundman and missing their alloted start time. But they made up for it with a fairly good set. Synths, two guitars, bass and drums. There were some cowbells added in for fun. Good, moving tunes. Surely, "Tetris" would have been a much better name.
Pikelet was the reason I rocked up tonight. One girl alone with acoustic guitar, accordion, floor tom, glockenspiel. There's probably been even more. She'd play one instrument and loop it, crafting loops that sometimes got out of control and turned into great droning beasts. Rough 'round the edges, but can't be too critical, she's just played a show in another state last night after a northern European tour or something, things were bound to be a bit jet-lagged. Fascinating, especially when playing with the drum and tapping the microphone.
The Ruby Suns, from New Zealand. First time in Sydney. Decorated the stage with colourful lights. Played some peppy, light, cheery pop. Nothing really mnd-blowingly extraordinary, but at least it got some people dancing. Props to the smartly dressed underaged revelers dancing by the fire exit.
