i came mainly for bob evans. i had always been a fan of jebediah, so i had to come check out their front man going solo.
the gig was sold out and when we got there, there was a massive line to go in. never seen anything like this at the metro or enmore theatre before, let alone a shonky little backwater venue like this place. i didn't even think anyone would turn up, considering none of them has really has a song playing on the radio these days, as far as i was aware. who told them to turn up? oh, surely not triple m?
anyway, bob evans, first man up, just a mic and acoustic guitar. every guy on tonight, and it is an all guys night, had just a mic and a guitar. the jebbies' frontman turned out, in our opinion, the best set of the night. brilliant pop songs about life in the suburbs and old rusted mitsubishis. funny how when someone in the crowd shouted for an old jebediah song, he said "i don't do covers." but it would have been nice if he did a few jebbies tunes, cos not everyone of his solo stuff was as strong.
you am i frontman tim rogers got up on stage with kevin/bob. and that was the best thing tim did all night. when for the next set, tim was on stage by himself, it was a bit erratic in quality. the guy can write some great songs, no matter if bmg records just dumped you am i or whatever. interesting to hear songs where he tells us how little bmg matters and stuff like being in the music business for the music, not the business. apprently his mum and friends were around the place, and the show was pretty loose and informal. even by their standards. good songs, but the "show" wasn't as strong.
evan dando, former frontman of the lemonheads. what are they most famous for? i forgot. some joke cover, i think. ("mrs. robinson"? ) there were a few covers in all the sets here tonight. bob evan's "rain drop keeps dropping on my head" was the best, tim rogers' cover of tenacious d's "wonder boy" mashed up with silverchair's "greatest view" had to be the most upsetting for me.
i never cared much for evan dando or lemonheads. so, by that initally low standard, it was alright. he doesn't like to pause between songs and likes to just keep steamrolling on. it's almost as if if he doesn't do enough songs in the set time, he won't get paid or something. he had lots of fans there but he wasn't talking to them much. he tried to get bob evans on stage with him but nothing happened. did he leave early? then he got tim rogers on stage and they jammed out a few tunes together.
then we had to split for the train back up north.
