2SER Fundraiser 2003
Deepchild
I like to rock up early and catch every scrap of the gig, get my full moneys worth. Cos Im tight. And I was very disappointed that only at most 20 other people felt the same way and the sweet dub stylings of Deepchild was not appreciated and admired by more people. I did my part and wriggled my butt a bit a few steps up from the empty dance floor.
Telemetry Orchestra
This is practically the same line up as last year, plus B[if]tek! Sorry, cut the history lesson. This is the first time I have ever heard the Telemetry Orchestra uninterrupted by technical problems! A cute blend of dreamy, but not too chilled beats. You could sit down and chill out to it, as most people did. Or you could be a pioneer, and step on up to wriggle your butt to it, as we chose to. :-D
B[if]tek
Theyre like the new Kraftwerk, arent they? They have songs about machines, they turn up in uniform, and theres serious doubt as to just how live their live performances are. Their set was virtually indistinguishable (ooh, big word.) from the last time we caught them, and their tweaking of the on stage electronics seem to bear no corresponding effect on the sounds reproduced. Getting a bit suspicious. The set list did end differently this time, and we got a semi encore of we think youre dishy. A plus in anyones book, surely. Funky, kooky electro.
Deepchild returns
Sydneys more than adequate answer to Kruder & Dorfmeister, Mr. Rick Bull got back on the decks to rip the roof off the joint! Ok, he didnt exactly set the house on fire. In fact, I admire the man, but in total honesty, he has done lot better dj sets than this. But hes got a new album to push, (Whats Going Wrong, its been getting rave reviews everywhere. Just get yourself a copy, alright?) so hes got to play his new single, even if its too slow and sort of sticks out oddly in his mix. At the end of his set, I got to the edge of the stage, waved him round and harassed him a bit about a dud mix! No, I didnt do that. I was a total fan boy, waved him around and just raved about how much I love his music and been looking for his rare first album everywhere, but neither him nor I can find it anywhere. Total fucking fan boy. :-P
The Herd
Arent they meant to be the top of the tree in Aussie Hip Hop? A supergroup of multiple characters from the Elefant Traks record label? Last I caught them they were a bit, erm, difficult, weird, electro to even some glitch drumn bass mashed up with hip hop. I dont know what the fuck was going on back then. Its more accessible this time around. Maybe therere better songs off their recent second album? Were not hip hop kids, (we just like to pretend and then ridicule it because we dont fully understand it,) but like a $3.30 bag of fresh hip hop, from my local fish and chips shop, they did get my head bobbing like bottle tops. But could have done with a bit more electronic flavours on top. Ahh, think I better finish that off with the word scallops. (I just like to pretend sometimes...)
Sub Bass Snarl
After sitting out for the Herd, with a bit too much pent up energy, a fairly decent beat, I think Id been too nice too long, bout time I got messy. Last I heard Sub Bass Snarl mix, they were doing some totally wrong and weird mash ups. So it was a nice surprise to find them tearing it up with some heavy ragga style drumn bass. Then they even had an MC step up on stage with them. (Next theyll be doing rewinds! Boh! Boh seleka!) Crazy business. Not to everyone's tastes. (One of the good things about drum'n bass?)
The Bird
Just cant get enough of these kids. Seriously this time, because everyone else before them wanted a few extra minutes on stage and we've got a train to catch. As far as Im aware, the first time they played the main stage at the Metro. They havent quite sold out the venue yet, but really, with new album just coming out, its just a matter of time. Hard to say much about it having only caught a fraction of it, other than the beginning of maybe Lei Kung, the keyboard dies and the guy has to take the faulty keyboard off the rack and put it on the floor so he can use the keyboard under that. All the while, the mad drummer just says only the drums! and carries the song off. The magic of live music. Gotta catch them more often before they get too big and their dancefloors gets too crowded. Its only a matter of time.
