Candle Concert 2003
Candle With Care.
Tim Oxley 8:30-9
we missed his set.
Anthony Atkinson 9:05-9:35
i think we caught most of his set. sort of average. i liked the drumming.
Ruck Rover 9:45-10:15
er, sort of average, i suppose, when the most memorable thing about the set was the little jokes in between songs. and that rocking song about the spiders! "rob clarkson! australia's answer to darren hanlon!"
Jodi Phillis 10:20-10:50
ooh. for me, (i know ben feels differently, but for me at least,) the coolest girl of the gig. a very quiet and very beautiful set, with her just sitting down with an acoustic guitar. she was so quiet, the crowd had to shoosh themselves down at the beginning. and they had to turn the lights off to calm people down a bit. some people didn't get it and kept standing up for quite a while. i wonder why they even bothered turning up. so disrespectful!
Golden Rough 11:00-11:30
mmm, the beginning of their set bored me a tad, but they made up for it 'round the end when they played some better songs. but still, mmm...
Darren Hanlon 11:35-12:05
"lismore's answer to rob clarkson!" i still believe darren hanlon is australia's best song writer. (ben folds don't count.) this set felt too short! he didn't even have enough time to tell us what he was doing with slim dusty's banjo! the songs were of course, as usual, smart, funny, witty, cute and lovely and all, with quite a few new tracks slipping in... but an A Capella version of "title fight:heart vs. mind"!!! we witness something extremely special tonight! anyone who was there realised that!
The Lucksmiths 12:15-1am
candle record's big headlining act! didn't catch the whole set because of the train's strange timetable. don't think i've ever seen a drummer do their thing standing up and having their arms straight down to hit the drums before. (didn't one of the Wiggles play air drums like that?) really, it was a bit hard to top darren's set. (darren hanlon was keyboard player for the lucksmiths before going solo, i was told.) but they were still pretty good. we left just as they start into their big hit, "t-shirt weather". damn!
overall, mmm, i don't know. let's see. for me at least. 2 very good sets from darren hanlon and jodi phillis, two pretty good sets from the lucksmiths and ruck rover. for the low low price of $15. yeah, top value.
