Homebake 2002

fuck Dj Shadow! Homebake kick multiple sun burnt arses!

we got there, scoped the place out, then settled down in the cover of the big top techno tent, listening to the jazzy sounds of the Sneaky Sound System. but it wasn't enough for me. shouldn't be sitting down and chilling out so early. so i think we wandered around, wanted to check out what was going down at every stage. but we never got to the "Acoustic Pavilion" properly. i have great difficulties accepting what we saw was all that there was to it. it was too small!

then we were back in the cover of the techno tent. i couldn't take anymore of this sitting around. so i dared ben for $2 to "get the fuck up and dance!". we got up for the light house stylings of Offcutts. eventually, mark and donny found and joined us. but i guess they weren't getting heavily into it, as they wanted to go out into the sun and check out Superheist.

they sucked. they don't deserve much more word space here.

then we wandered on to the Sleepy Jacksons set. the first song we caught was totally rocking. not what i expected. then they did their big hit, whatever it was called. it was the one everyone else knew the words to. sort of. and the power cut out on them. major bummer. people tried to sing the humming chorus.

australian dance music awards winner for album of the year and producer of the year, Katalyst, sucked. they don't deserve much more word space here.

went and checked out Eskimo Joe. lot better than i remember them last year. i was getting burnt in the sun, so i went searching for a hat. on my way i saw the hopetoun stage was pretty shitty and thought we may give Rhubarb a miss if they're playing there. anyway, Eskimo Joe. very good. the acousitc song was definately something special. so was "turn up your stereo", a song they apprently don't like to play anymore.

couldn't manage to make out way around the place to Rhubarb after Eskimo Joe, others went searching for food while i went for a few minutes of Wicked Beat Sound System. i love this band.

Jebediah. i love this band. went to the very front. lost everyone else very early. it was very rough up front. in fact, for the last few songs i moved to the side and had a much better time when i wasn't worrying about dumb arse kids doing stupid things around me.

i was wrecked after that. we sat outside the hopetoun stage/tent chilling out. i went in for two or three songs from Gelbison. nice.

Pacifier was a bit too much for me. too loud. and not too much fun with the sun blaring down on us. we left mid way for the wacky stylings of avalanche-ee James de la Cruz.

Gerling. woowee. Gerling. how awesome were they? being shoved into the techno tent, i was hoping for more dancey bits, but they came out rocking. 45min felt so short. i wanted so much more. lucky we didn't change our plans and see Rocket Science instead. they weren't gonna be this good. high jackers manual has become like the channel ten theme, hasn't it. "just think you got me, right where you want me, COME ON!" hehe, cool. but no enter space capsule? what's with that?

left for food, i came back quickly without the others (cause i just can't get enough) and caught the last half of 1200 Techniques. they were much better than when i saw them supporting Sonic Animation earlier this year. i think they also had some new songs. "champion! number one!". kick arse! then they went for their big final, hip hop dance mesh up and the power cut out on them. they had worked the crowd up so much, people didn't wanna leave. minutes passed, the crowd kept clapping, and dj peril came back banging a drum stick to a tin can and the other two guys came back and did them same and the whole crowd clapped along. kemstar the guitar player broke out into some funky freaky dancing, we all cheered. the drummer at the back gave it his all, trying hard to keep the vibe going. but eventually people started leaving. they did get power back, those of us who stayed got a lot more space. and they kicked it! wicked!

as the main stage brought on something for the oldies with Radio Birdman and You Am I, it was techno tent all the way for us from here on in.

i've seen Kid Kenobi too many times this year. but this time he had to build it up for Pnau and Sonic. so the set was a lot harder and darker. just the way i like it. there was even some drum'n bass styles going on.

Pnau pronounced: pin-yeeoow, pee-neeoow, or poo-now. i prefer to use the first one. although "poo now" is pretty funny. they didn't just bring the technologies this year. this time round they had xylophone and bass guitar and trumpet. started off sweetly with some soft sounds. i felt it took too long for them to build it up. quit stalling and bring on the funk! when they brought it on, they brought. it. on. you know what i'm saying. it was funky as, groovier than anything. and by the end they were banging it hard and got the techno tent moshing. when was the last time i'd seen something like that? arr, right, Sonic. in between they also showed off some new songs. the new tracks rock. like, really. dump them french house sounds and bang it home! mr. Littlemore was like, "what? you don't call no more? what the fuck's with that?" and then BANG! darker and harder, just the way i like it.

went out for a rest on the grass. watching, not really listening to Grinspoon in the distance. i was busting to get right back in the tent.

Sonic Animation. arr. let's see: my first big day out, first homebake, second big day out, sonic tour. so this is my 5th time seeing sonic? felt like should've been more, yet at the same time, not enough. i was so overly excited, when they turned out the lights and i saw rupert testing the electronic drum kit, i was already raving. since the sonic tour, they've been in the studio. and we got a taste of some new Sonic. pretty dope shit. but the tent was packed. this year they got the final slot at the techno tent and the other stages have already finished for the night. other kids, if they weren't seeing Alex Lloyde they were here. so that was a bummer, being packed just a bit too tight. but i would've done it all again to see Sonic live. Sonic live is just so damn good. they first do the pop tunes, with Theo and Robbie still with us. and then pound us silly with the hardcore numbers. and they do both styles very nicely. something maybe only mark will understand: the best bit was like the second last song. the medley from the new screeching pounder into joyride and then finishing off with the switch into jump like they did at the sonic tour? awesome.

kenneth's top 3
3. Gerling.
2. Sonic. excellent show, as always. but maybe not as good as last year? hey mark?
1. pin-yeeoow. an adventure. took us thru house, jazzy moments with trumpet. rocked out with drums and guitar, very groovy, and then pound it home. much better than last year.
