Baggsmen
Blue Juice
going out on a friday night, ben had to work, so we got there about an hour late. but because it's a student union organised event, that turns out to be just in time.
this first band, Blue Juice, was pretty crazy. reminds me of staying up real late and watching Rage and seeing some old Beastie Boys video clips of when they had guitars and rocked. two rappers, bass, drums and keys, one of the "rappers" was totally going off! arms were twitching in all weird directions, bodies were bouncing up and down... meanwhile, on the floor, there were these two guys that were having a fair go at going off too. i thought maybe they were with the band, cause the band was good, but this didn't seem right.
the crowd at the Manning Bar of Sydney Uni was quite disappointing. i wasn't expecting a sold out crowd, but i expected more than this. Baggsmen used to be called the Hive, (before the Hive blew up in europe, but it was another hive, while a third hive was starting to get big here, but the second hive really blew them all away...) and they did have a few hits on Triple J. i've seen them once before at Homebake when they had a really early timeslot. and i wanted to catch them at the last Big Day Out, but got there too late and caught 1200 Techniques instead.
Baggsmen comes on, and it's only bass, keys and drums! they had at least two of their singers at Homebake! and the singers are a major part of their sound! how can they do a show without their singers. i thought they would come on later, but when they played a song with the vocals on tape, the awful truth sank in. i was so disappointed, and ben wasn't getting into it either. thinking back, they were actually pretty good. there was this one track that was pretty special. i remember it being introduced as "some japanese school girl porno soundtrack", it was kitchy, with wacked out japanese samples and it was pretty dope. but the crowd was thinning out, the two guys we thought were with Blue Juice had disappeared, the few girls on the dance floor had called it a night, and so had we.
it was a pretty fun night still, nice catching up with ben again. we joked about p.o.w. camps, script ideas, trees in jails, bat factories, the usual... surely would love to do that again soon.
