Telemetry Orchestra
the 2SER Turnover, Part 2. a fundraiser for community radio station 2SER (Sydney Educational Radio, apparently)
in the little room at the metro
getting there
mark the kiwi missed the fucking train again. second time now. he thinks he can make it to the station in time because he reckons his Paseo has a 1.8l engine when it really has a 1.5l. flooring it he still can't beat a train that was traveling at approximately 60km/h and stopping at all stops. how much does this guy suck?
telemetry orchestra
caught the tail end of the set. there were some issues with the sound and with failing equipment. from the little that i heard it sounded pretty good. the others weren't getting into it and went outside to buy beer instead because they didn't want to pay extra for the metro's overpriced beer. i shouldn't have went with them, telemetry orchestra was playing some cool glitchy house music. it was interesting seeing how they smuggled it in, though.
deep child
now deepchild was cool. wicked dub with oversized bass lines. very groovy shit. the guys dared me to get up and dance as most people were sitting down. there were a few up front that were getting really into it and moving along to the music. i got up and danced and they told me to sit down again because i can't dance. but as it says in my icq info: "i can't dance, but i still do. so, like, if you can, you really should start dancing around. and if you can't, you should go dance around anyway. 'cause there are so many idiot drivers around you'll probably get run over soon." yea, my philosophical ideology of the month.
dj sub bass snarl
i think he was mixing cds instead of vinyl. no matter, as long as the music was good. i was still up and "dancing" at the back, none of the others would. lazy arse mothers. then to finish off the set, the dj played a fucked up version of a kylie minogue song. like dj shadow's "monosylabik", it was a silly idea drawn out a tad too far and over stayed it's welcome.
the herd
by this time the others were getting bored and the herd didn't help matters. really, they were all right, the music can really get rocking. but i guess none of my friends were into hip hop, and i'm not a massive fan either. but the music was quite nice, at times getting close to 2 step/garage, in a good way.
some girl dj
i'm not against a girl dj, in fact, i wish there were more. i just really didn't know who she was or what name she was performing under. totally no disrespect meant at all by labeling her as just "some girl dj". with the bird coming up next, i started moving into the crowd. i motioned the others to come with me, but they didn't. now what's with that? i was left all alone on the dance floor, with my horrible dance moves and the likes. but i didn't care. i was getting intoxicated on bass.
the bird
oh, they were too good. really, too good to remain underground for much longer. any day now, like Pnau before them, this sydney group are going to get a new record deal with someone massive and make it big overseas and all that jazz. and i am so lucky to have been able to catch them, twice now, before they explode (anyday now). this time only the core members on technologies and drums. with two special drums lovingly called "bluey baby" and "mamma bluey", constructed from two blue containers, the type you'd expect to have once stored some toxic chemicals or biohazards or whatnot. no matter, the point was it made bass like no conventional drums can. and boy, was the set wicked. wicked as anything. totally. starting off again with broken rhythms, gradually forming some form of structure. then breaking it down into some form of dub meets electro. and then just building and building and building into hard edged, loud, thundering drum'n bass. words do not do them justice. if the bird come near your town, what the hell are you doing at home? get out there and witness the best thing out of sydney, ever. bigger than Gerling, bigger than Pnau.
aftermath
that girl dj's on again. the crowds full of sweating guys and girls that's been giving it their all for the bird. many around look too tired to go on. it's been good, bloody excellent. there were these two girls that's been messing around with kinky latex wears and lubricants on the dance floor, very funny shit. and what have my friends been up to all this time? they went out to the bar to drink! what the fuck is wrong with these people? it's sickness, man. them and their alcohol, it's not good. they are all tired and shit and what have they done all night? stayed back and got drunk. bloody alcohol, it's stupid. i was having the most wicked time up front in the crowd and they were just slumped in the corner! yea, i'm knocking alcohol. alcohol's for fools. how can alcohol be legal and ecstasy not? it's madness.
