Sonic Animation
1200 Techniques
Erratic

on friday, me and the hip-hop loving ultimate b-boy 5000, mark the kiwi, trekked on south to the city to catch Sonic Animation. got there on time because we are tight arses and want to get our full money's worth. about four hours of wickedness for $21.30, value!

spot the dj...
DJ ARCHIE was some dj that's meant to be playing at the start and in between the acts. i think he was some where behind the various drums, machines and technologies. mark thought there was noone there and we were just listening to a mix disc. we sat back on the massive steps behind unlogical barriers nodding along, discussing the important issues like cash converters, over priced beer, where's the dj, nasty suicide bombers jokes, past memories of fun times we had half a metre away from the speakers at past concerts, strange machines on stage, was the smoke from smoke machines or from the crowd...

who the...
ERRATIC was the first act of the night. electric guitar and bass, drums, bongos and technologies. their sound was wicked. reminded me of some of that new Chemical Brothers where they have quite a bit of guitars to some loud, steady beats. (denmark!) mark was excited by the psycho bongo playing. their set was short, the songs all sounded similar except for one slow rock piece. but that didn't matter much, it was a good sound. we even moved on down so we can look stupid on the dance floor. we had to because they turned up the air conditioning and we were getting very cold up on the steps. top act, one to watch out for in future.

"who the fuck you think we be; we're 1 dj and 3 mcs; we bring the noise; the decibels; cause this beat is HARD; hard as HELL!!!"
1200 TECHNIQUES. i don't know. less than i expected. not fully their fault. i felt the sound wasn't quite right. maybe it was all set up for tech and hip hop just doesn't sound right through the same systems. couldn't clearly catch the rapping. but not bad. mark would of course disagree, with him loving hip hop so much and what not.

find the spot...
as dj archie brings on the big beats, (or the mix disc moves on to the harder tracks,) and the crowd moves back to the bar, we move on up to find a better spot to fully appreciate Sonic Animation.

SONIC ANIMATION
the ones we've come to see, the ones' we've waited for, the ones' we'd pay over $20 to check out anyday. $20? Bargain! bring it on anyday, baby! of course, needless to say, they delivered, fully. full effect, man. it freaking, went, off. wicked and then some, you know? the strange machines around the stages turned out to be rows of strobe lights that are pointed directly at us (read, eye level, exactly, directly, into our eyes. nasty!). after hours spent wriggling around in the dark, they were very nasty. we had to turn away or cover our eyes for a moment there.

the set? fun times get compressed. i forget. i forgot what they kicked off with. but i'm sure it was good cause i remembered being very delighted and happy and jumpy and over excited. i remember some moments that were very special. like when the guys breaked into some beat box action, like when a slow dub track on the album freaked out into a drum'n bass track live. but damn, before i know it, about two hours was gone! i think i'll have to write more about this later, when i remember what happened!

"great times, fellow dancer, great times..."
