Flabbergasted Fencers

The residents of a Retirement Home had waited a long time for the installment of a privacy fence around the common yard, and they all gathered to watch when the big day came.

A band of husky young men arrived in a truck with picks, saws, shovels, hammers, long planks of wood, and boxes of nails ready to go. For five days, the residents watched as the 100 yard long fence slowly took shape. It was only after the fence was completed and the band of workers were packed up and ready to leave that they realized they had neglected to leave a way for them to get out!

One resident was quoted to say: "It was like watching a Laurel and Hardy film. You could see them looking at the fence, then at the lorry, then at the fence again." She ended by saying. "Some of us wondered about the lorry but we didn't want to interfere."

A council spokesman later commented: "It was an oversight. Maybe they got carried away in their work." The next morning, the residents gathered once again to watch as the workers returned to dismantle a part of the fence in order to retrieve the truck.
