1. How & when did DENIM & LEATHER begin?
The idea of starting the band occurred in 1992, when myself [Sergio (guitar)], Marcelo (vocal) and Hamilton (drums) met together at a Rock Festival and started complaining how good Traditional Heavy Metal bands were missing. A few days later we began to jam, with a different bass player, some covers as, Saxon, Picture, Judas Priest, AC/DC, etc, but we didnt take it too much serious. In 1995 we fired the bass player and Gustavo (Marcelos brother), who has been following the band since the beginning, decided to start playing the instrument to join the band. One year after that the band came back to the jamming. In 1998 we realised that the 20th Anniversary of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal would be celebrated and we had to do something about it. So we made a list of some of best bands of that era and started the rehearsals (serious for the first time), and along with that we began to write songs to do some gigs as DENIM AND LEATHER N.W.O.B.H.M. TRIBUTE BAND.
2. What is the Brazilian Metal scene like? Are there a lot of clubs that will allow Metal bands to play, and are there very many people into it there?
Well, there are some clubs, but not a lot. There is always a place to go to see some Metal bands on the weekend, specially here in So Paulo. Weve playing kind of once in a month or two. And there are many people into Metal, the problem is that most of the people dont support local bands, except for Sepultura, Angra and Krisiun. So there are always a lot of people to see foreign bands and just a few to see local bands. We have already played for crowds from 20 to 400 headbangers.
3. How did you get into the NWOBHM?
Unfortunately, we are not old enough to had lived that time! When we started to listen to Heavy Metal, around 83/84, the only NWOBHM bands which there albums were released here were Iron Maiden, Saxon, Def Leppard, Angelwitch and Demon. All the other bands were very difficult to find and expensive. Then came the CD era together with that some facilities to import CDs and everything became easier. And we could get a lot of bands that only knew by magazines. One CD that really blowed us and were real important in our decision of playing NWOBHM songs is Lars Ulrichs NWOBHM 79Revisited, that showed to us to a lot of good bands that we have never listened before.
4. Any favorite NWOBHM bands / albums?
NWOBHM is like a snow ball, every time you find a band or a song that you have never listened before, more you like that era, and more you like that era, more you go looking for bands or songs that you dont know. Here is our top 15 list: ANGEL WITCH - Angel Witch; BLITZKRIEG - Time of Changes; DEF LEPPARD - High 'n' Dry; DEMON - Night of The Demon; DIAMOND HEAD - Lightning To The Nations; GIRLSCHOL Demolition; HOLOCAUST Nightcomers; IRON MAIDEN Killers; SAMSON - Shock Tactics; SAXON - Denim And Leather; TYGERS OF PAN TANG Spellbound; VENOM - Black Metal; WHITE SPIRIT - White Spirit; WITCHFINDER GENERAL - Death Penalty; WITCHFYNDE - Give 'Em Hell.
5. If you could see any NWOBHM band live, who would you want to see?
Haha, thats really funny! The only NWOBHM bands that ever played here in Brazil are Iron Maiden (5 times), Def Leppard (1 time, and played just 2 or 3 old songs) and Saxon (twice), so any band it would be great! But we would sure love to see an Angelwitch or a Demon or a Witchfinder General show!
6. What have you recorded so far as a band?
Our first promo-tape is untitled We Wear..., we recorded in 2000, and have two of our songs and one cover/medley of Witchfinder General. Right now (on the first week of Setember/2001), we are going to the studio to record our new promo-cd, it will be untitled Too Damn Loud! and will have 3 of our songs and a Tygers Of Pan Tangs cover. The CD-R of Too Damn Loud! will have as a bonus track the three songs from We Wear....
7. What is new for the band right now?
When you will be reading this our new promo CDR Too Damn Loud!, will be just ready. And our plans are to play around Brazil and next year record a full length album. |
