Adding a Little Spice
Sunday I finished my Fleece Artist Merino Wool socks. True to my complex plan, I dug out two skeins of worsted weight blue Cotton Fleece 100% cotton yarn for my next pair of socks. These are for my mom; she’s allergic to wool so I have to use plain yarns to make socks for her. They are knitting up quick, I’m all ready ½ done with the first sock. With all day 4th of July to knit my little heart out, these babies should be done in no time flat.
However, upon finishing up the first sock I realize that I have a slight problem: I don’t have enough yarn. I only bought 2 skeins of yarn of yarn thinking 100 grams of yarn always equals a pair of socks. Obviously there is a flaw in this equation. I haven’t the foggiest clue where it is. Now I don’t know what to do about my socks other than scream, curse and expand the vocabulary of my sock. However, I doubt this will get the sock done and improve my knitting karma much. I have a slight bit of hope that Knit on Pearl in Jackson Hole, WY might have another skein when I go to visit later this month. For the moment I am making offerings to the knitting goddess to gain her favor in this endeavor. Any suggestions to improve my chances of her hearing my pleas will be greatly appreciated.
In despair, I’ve all ready have turned to a skein of Trekking XXL in Color 71, blues and greens tweeded with black for comfort. I’m such a yarn slut; when one yarn gives me the cold shoulder, I’m all ready in the arms of another one.
So many people praise Trekking yarns; it’s easy to see why. Even though they are technically self-strippers, they are generally subtle enough that they don’t scream, “Look, I’m a self-stripping yarn!” at the top of their yarny little lungs. The colorways are always beautiful even in colors I don’t like. I’ve had this particularly yarn in my stash for a couple of months. For some reason I kept putting off knitting it up. It’s so beautiful in the skein that I’m almost afraid to touch it. But I didn’t buy yarn just to keep it around to collect dust. Yarn is meant to be knitted up; whether by me or someone else.
Okay, all of my socks to date have been a generic ribbed pattern that I can adapt to a variety of weights of yarns. Can anyone recommend a sock pattern that can adapt to a variety of foot size, it has to go up to at least Mens size 10, no cables (I don’t know how to cable yet), must be knittable on dpns, (we won’t go into the horror story of my attempt to knit socks on circulars, lets just say it was ugly and the poor yarn did not deserve such treatment or to hear such language) that I can try just to give my socks some pattern variety? I love my basic pattern but I can nearly knit it in my sleep. Variety is the spice of life and my socks could use a little spice right now.
OTN Report:
Still the Grape Harbor Shawl from Wendy Knits though the Knitpicks Option Needles have helped me make some progress but this is still a WIP.
My generic sock pattern in Cotton Classic, color 3870. Having run out of yarn, these are going to be on the needles until at least July 18.
My generic sock pattern in Trekking XXL in color 71 to make me feel better.
SOS done: 1 pair, 2 socks on the needles.
