Soaking up the sun on beautiful Pelee Island, the 4th Annual Pelee Island
Women's 7's Tournament was played last Saturday, August 26th. Some came to
play in costume, some came for the souvenior wines, "Rugby Rouge" and "Boot
Juice," and others just HAD to see if Hula Girl would return to the
festivities after her mysterious disappearance last year. . .but all
enjoyed playing this women's 7's tournament on a wonderful little Canadian
island.
Results: Competitive Division: In a well-played match against Columbus, Ohio, the Denial team took the Competitive Championship with a final score of 20-0. "BB" or #57 on their team was also awarded MVP of the Competitive Division. Denial tells me this is the very first time they've won a Championship, although they often make it to the final match of a tournament, so - congratulations and well-played! Perhaps Columbus will find some consolation in their winning the Talent Show with a dramatic "Hula Girl Rescue." And there's always next year. . . Social Division: St. Louis took first in a close match with Columbus B-side (the final score is still on the dry-erase board, but unfortunately not in my notes - anyone have it?). Maury from the St. Louis team was also awarded MVP. Their team skit, "A rugby fashion show," also came quite close to winning the talent show. . . Of note also was the semi-final match in the Competitive Division between arch-rivals and sister teams, Michigan and Columbus. This match, final score 10-7 in favor of Columbus, had spectators on their toes. Well-played! Many other fine rugby moments occured over the weekend, and, although everyone partied hard after the tournament, it was all in good fun. In talking with islanders following the tournament, some comments included, "This is my favorite weekend all summer - I look forward to it every year," and "You girls really add spice to our tourist season." The islanders also observed ruggers the day after the tournament touring the island by foot, bicycle, and automobile and several commented on how "you don't just come here to play and party - you really get to know the island." Other facts: all bars on the West side of the island were completely OUT of draft beer following the tournament, and the winery had to place an emergency order with the mainland to restock.
What a weekend! See you all next year! |
