Neverwinter Knights - Goblin Keep

From the notebook of Elrylith Rebriviel:

Tarsakh 5-8, 1375: The students gather up as much of the stolen goods as they can fit onto their horses, in addition to the bound and gagged cleric of Bane, and Darvin. The trip back to Neverwinter is met with good spirits, but with caution as well as they avoid sleeping in wayinns. Upon returning to the Academy, they are greeted by Ely. There is an spirited discussion about the expectations of students. The students go about identifying their newfound magical items and divvying up their treasure. Darvin and Barnaby go to a tavern, where they buy a map off a half-orc stranger reported to leading to goblins, gold and magical weapons. The next morning they hatch a plan to slip out of the Academy by having Harold disguise himself as a teacher. They recruit the geography professor Wyland Chode, who is in for an equal share. In an attempt to leave behind the wizard, Matteo uses a spell to look like him, encounters Ely, learn that Wyland is waiting for them at the gates. Wisely, they leave off on the plan. The ride to dungeon of the map is uneventful. Upon finding the entrance, Matteo trips a glyph of hold person. Then the students discover goblins. It is a mighty fight that goes badly for the goblins. Wyland removes the hold on Matteo so he can participate. The students end up chasing a goblin.

Tarsakh 8, 1375: The students kill the goblin and now face a door. Beyond the door is a room with some merchant goods. There are several stairwells down, and also several gnawed dead goblin bodies. The students come upon a room with four goblins and do battle. There is a crudely carved statue of a goblin which Darvin believes generates goblins. He knocks it over. More exploration bring them to four more goblins who are more advanced than the goblins they have faced so far. One reads a scroll to become a bat, but is killed before it can flee. Another appears to be a cleric and gives a good battle. Another is a rogue and dies easily. The final is a fighter-type and lasts the longest. There is lots of treasure, potions, scrolls and a rod. More exploration brings them down many more stairs where they encounter a room with the skeleton of a dragon. Once all but Wyland are inside the room, the door slams shut and a grayish mist swirls around the dragon, colescing it to the image of a regal silver dragon. It speaks in the common tongue, "I am the guardian. Speak the password to pass. Answer the riddle to receive a great treasure."

Tarsakh 8, 1375: The students ask for the riddle. Thus spoke the dragon, "I am free for the taking through all of your life, Though given but once at birth. I am less than nothing in weight, But will fell the strongest of you if held." Ignacio says, "Breath." The dragon reveals, "To find the treasure, follow the pattern." This proves to be a most cryptic clue to the students who spend a goodly amount of time trying to find patterns in everything from how the floor is set to the portraits of the gnomes in the hallway, after trying to open all of the doors in the room the dragon is trapped in (The dragon repeats he is the guardian and they need the password). They explore some more, finding more portraits, a auditorium with a crudely carved statue of a gnome. They are attacked by four dust mephits. They rest in one of the portrait halls, and are beseiged by whispering voices. The voices warn the students to leave, and then say the way is blocked. Barnaby becomes possessed and attacks Darvin. The halfling is knocked unconscious. Wyland is then possessed, which proves to be more of a challenge. He, too, is rendered unconscious. Eventually, they come upon a hall of gnome statues (no apparently pattern). Wyland and Barnaby show no more effects of bring possessed, so they are released. Wyland helps the students to see the wisdom of leaving by the path they know rather than wandering further in the dungeon. They come upon more goblins and kill them all. A little more exploring and then they leave, finding their horses missing. They find the horses, but not the tack. Undaunted, they return to the academy.
