SUFFRAGE:                            18 years of age; universal. Note that all eligible voters elect the president by direct vote                                               

                                        every four years. The Prime Minister is the head of government and is chosen as the   

                                        leader of the majority party in parliament.

                                        Election Results  -       (presidential – Taainiana Puunika was reelected in July 2001 for  

                                                                        another 4 year term. He won 63% of the vote against 2 other   

                                                                        candidates for the presidency). Next elections to be held July  

                                                                        2005 for the presidency.

 

 

 

LEGISLATIVE BRANCH:       unicameral parliament (38 seats; members are elected by popular vote to serve 4 year  

                                        terms.)

 

                                        Election Results (2000):       Conservative Party 47.4% (18), Labour Party 21.1% (8),

                                        Social Democratic Party 18.4% (7), Green Party 11.0% (4), Independent 2.6% (1)

                                        Last elections held 14 January 2000, next election to be held 14 January 2004.
