The Tar Heel Edge
John Edwards, without the support of his own state.
A Demout Report, July 13, 2004
The fact that Kerry's approval rating only went up slightly because of John Edwards' joining the ticket isn't good news for the Kerry camp.  The support Edwards is getting from his native state, however, isn't helping.

In a USA Today/CNN/Gallup Poll Friday, Saturday and Sunday in North Carolina, 57% of likely voters said having Edwards on the ticket wouldn't make them more likely to vote for Kerry, while 30% said it would; 12% said it would make them less likely to support the ticket.  In the state,
the Bush-Cheney team still holds a 15-point lead among likely voters.

This isn't all that suprising, considering how the Kerry camp has been treating the southern states.

"Al Gore proved that you can get elected President of the United States without winning one Southern state... if he had simply won New Hampshire," Kerry said in a California fund-raiser.  "Democrats have to stop looking at the small solution that the country is compartmentalized in that way."

"Everybody always makes the mistakes of looking South," Kerry also said at a New Hampshire gathering.
