I grew up in Walled Lake, Michigan, which is located about 30 miles northwest of Detroit. I had many hobbies as a child, most notably, Highland Dancing (scottish with bagpipes and kilts) and long distance running. I've been running since 1977!
I attended Michigan State University where I had eight majors before getting out with a business degree I never wanted and never used!
My Life As An Educator
Right after graduation, I moved to Athens, Georgia, where I spent the next twelve years of life. I worked for a catering company while going back to school (University of Georgia) to complete a Masters degree in English Education. After that, I stuck around in Georgia teaching for five years at two high schools before moving back to Michigan in 2000. Currently, I am in my fourth year of teaching in Grosse Pointe. My favorite class is 9th Grade Honors. I love the novels I get to teach in that class (namely, Frankenstein and The Bean Trees) and my students are still young enough to enjoy creative projects and activities.
When I'm Not Working
Usually, I'm running or 'riting! I coach track at Grosse Pointe North High School. I am also a marathoner. I've completed six marathons in the past ten years and I am currently training for my first ultra marathon- a 50 mile race in November.
I am also a writer. Mainly I write creative nonfiction: essays about my childhood and 12 years spent in Athens. One day I hope to publish my autobiography.
I also love to travel. I've been to Spain, Dominican Republic, Mexico, England, Ireland and Wales. This summer I am traveling to Italy, France, and Spain. One day I hope to get to Scotland. My most memorable travel experiences have been rapelling down a castle tower in Northern Wales and suffering from a nasty bout with food poisoning in the Dominican Republic!
