the sorting hat is a very battered wizard's hat that resides in dumbledore's office at hogwarts. it sorts the first years into their houses every year by talking quietly into their ear, reading their minds, and then shouting the house out to the hall. the sorting hat also has other powers (such as containing the sword of griffindor in CoS) but they are not fully understood.
