Yahoo! Messenger isn't connecting. If Yahoo! Messenger is unable to connect to our servers, one of the following may occur: Your software may display a message that says it can't connect. The yellow "Connecting" light might last for a long time. The light may stay grey and say "Not Connected." First, check your email or surf web sites to see if you are connected to your ISP (Internet Service Provider). Next, make sure you have Microsoft's Internet Explorer version 4.1 or above installed on your machine. If you use Netscape as your browser, you don't have to switch to Internet Explorer or even run Explorer. In order to update your system files, you just have to install Internet Explorer. Yahoo! Messenger uses files from Internet Explorer to run. You can download version 5.5 from: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.htm All of the above conditions indicate a connection problem, not a problem with your Yahoo! ID or password. (If you receive an Invalid Login error message, there is a problem with your ID or password.) If you receive a message that says "You have been logged of as you have logged in on a different machine," this means that you have logged onto the Java Messenger while you were running the Windows Messenger, or vice versa. If Messenger was able to connect before, but has suddenly stopped, we may be having temporary server problems. These types of problems are usually resolved in a matter of hours. If the problem persists, your Messenger connection information may be incorrect. If Messenger has never been able to connect, try this: Open the Login menu in Messenger. Click on Preferences, then click on the Connection tab. Click on No network detection, then hit the OK button at the bottom. Messenger will ask you if you want to try to log on with your new proxy settings. Click the Yes button. When prompted, enter your ID and password, then hit the Login button. If that doesn't work, follow these steps: Open the Login menu in Messenger. Click on Preferences, then click on the Connection tab. Click on Firewall with no proxies, then hit the OK button at the bottom. Messenger will ask you if you want to try to log on with your new proxy settings. Click the Yes button. When prompted, enter your ID and password, then hit the Login button. The above configuration will work in almost any situation. However, if you connect in this way, you won't be able to use the voice chat feature. If neither of the above options work, you're probably behind a firewall or proxy server that requires you to enter its address. Follow these steps: Open the Login menu in Messenger. Click on Preferences, then click on the Connection tab. Click on Use proxies. Here you can enter your firewall and/or proxy server's address and port number. Contact your network administrator (if you're at work), or your Internet Service Provider (if you're at home) to determine the correct firewall and proxy settings.
Testing Microphone & Speakers The best way to test and adjust your computer for use with Yahoo! Messenger's Voice Chat feature is to use the Yahoo! Voice Chat Setup Wizard. The wizard will guide you through a series of tests to verify that your computer is configured correctly for voice. Alternatively, you may perform this simple test to determine whether your microphone and speakers are connected and adjusted properly: If you are currently in a voice chat conference, close the conference window. Close any other programs you have open that may be using your microphone or speakers. Click the Windows Start button in the lower-left corner of the screen. Select Programs, then Accessories, then Multimedia (in Windows 98, it's called Entertainment), then Sound Recorder. When the Sound Recorder window opens, click on the Record button (a red circle), say a few words into your microphone, then click the Stop button (a black square). While recording, you should see the sound waves from your voice displayed on the strip chart at the top of the Sound Recorder window. Click the Play button (a black triangle) to hear what you just recorded. If you do not hear anything but see the sound waves from your voice, then something is wrong with your speaker setup. If you do not see the sound waves from your voice, then the problem is with your microphone setup.
My graphical emoticons aren't working. There are two reasons why your graphic emoticons may not work: You don't have Microsoft Paint installed. The graphic emoticons preference has been disabled. When you initially installed Windows, it is possible that you didn't check the installation box for MS Paint. If this is the case, you need to install it by following these steps: Windows 95/98/NT/ME Click the Start button in the lower-left corner of your screen. Choose Settings, Control Panel, then Add/Remove Programs. Select the Windows Setup tab at the top of the Add/Remove Programs Properties screen. Highlight the Accessories option, then click the Details button. Scroll down the component list, check the box next to Paint (if it isn't already checked), and click the OK button. Press the OK button to install MS Paint. Windows 2000 Click the Start button in the lower-left corner of your screen. Choose Settings, Control Panel, then Add/Remove Programs. Click the Add/Remove Windows Components button on the left side of the window. Highlight the Accessories and Utilities component and click the Details button. Now highlight the Accessories subcomponent and press the Details button again. Scroll down the component list, check the box next to Paint (if it isn't already checked), and click the OK button. Press the OK button again to install Microsoft Paint. Please Note: Windows may ask you for the installation disk after pressing the OK button. It is also possible that the graphic emoticons preference has been disabled. Here's how to check: Click the Login menu at the top of the Messenger screen and select Preferences. Select the Messages tab and make sure the Enable graphic emoticons in messages box is checked. If these steps don't fix the problem, uninstall and reinstall Yahoo! Messenger. Doing this will not cause you to lose your Friend List because that information is stored on our servers, not your machine.
Offline Message Troubleshooting There are two possible reasons why you may not receive offline messages: You (or your ISP) are behind a firewall or proxy server. A firewall/proxy server controls what is let in and out of your network. If you think you are behind some type of security protection, please contact your network administrator (if you are at work) or your ISP (if you are at home) to help you configure your firewall/proxy server. We are experiencing temporary server problems. If this is the case, the server problem should be resolved within the day. Please Note: Offline messages are stored locally (on your computer), whereas instant messages are stored on our servers. This means that you can't access old offline messages from another computer if you've already read them. If your Messenger is crashing when you try to start it or when you try to view offline messages, it's possible that you have a corrupt offline message in your offline messages folder. To fix the problem, you will need to download and install the latest version of Yahoo! Messenger:
I keep getting disconnected. If Yahoo! Messenger works some but not all of the time, or if you find yourself getting randomly disconnected from Messenger, you may be connecting to the Internet through a firewall. Some firewalls cause Messenger to randomly disconnect. If you are using Messenger from a networked computer, this is probably the cause of your problems. Ask your System Administrator to open port 5050 to our Messenger servers, cs1.yahoo.com, cs2.yahoo.com, and cs3.yahoo.com. If you are not behind a firewall but you still get disconnected, you may be accessing the Internet at a peak period over a relatively slow connection. Messenger is designed to function normally in such cases. However, on rare occasions when traffic is extremely high, you may lose your connection.
What are identities (aliases) and profiles? You can only use one Yahoo! ID at a time on your Yahoo! Messenger, but you can create different aliases (also called identities) for yourself as a part of your main Yahoo! ID. Each alias/identity has its own profile. A profile includes additional information about yourself that you would like other people to see. For example, you might have a Yahoo! ID of "janedoe." As a part of this main ID, you might also create the alias "blueslover" and another one called "janiac." You could use "blueslover" to talk with your friends, and "janiac" to talk with your co-workers. You can also set Messenger so "blueslover" appears online and "janiac" appears offline, or vice versa, or so that both appear online at the same time. To view a person's profile, highlight the name of that person. Then, right-click on that friend's ID and select View Profile. To create a new alias for yourself, click the Login menu in the Messenger window and choose My Profiles. Then, click the Create/Edit My Profiles button. When creating an alias, please keep the following in mind: You can only choose a name that has not already been taken. You can create up to five aliases as part of a single Yahoo! ID. Once you have created these aliases, you can choose which one to use when adding a friend or sending an instant message. Turning aliases "off" and "on": To control which of your profiles appears as online or offline at any time, click the Login menu and choose My Profiles. Removing the X from the box next to any profile will cause that alias to appear as offline. Adding a friend with an alias: To control which alias you use to add a friend, click the Add button. You'll see your Yahoo! ID listed next to step 3. Click the down arrow to the right of your ID to select an alias from the list. Sending an instant message with an alias: To control which alias you use to send a message, double-click a friend's name to launch a message window. You'll see your ID displayed in a box in the upper-right corner. Click the down arrow to the right of this and select an alias from the list.
File Transfer With Yahoo! Messenger, you can send files to people on your Friend List, even if they are offline. Here's how: Right-click on the recipient's name in your Friend List. Click on Send a File. A new window called "Send a File..." will open. Click the Browse button and locate the file that you want to send. When you have selected the file, click the Send button. If you receive a file, a window called "Yahoo! Messenger File Receive..." will pop up. (You must be connected to the Yahoo! servers at the time to get this message). Follow these steps: Click on the Browse button to select where you want to download the file. Click the Download Now button. Note: You can only send up to 1.5 MB through File Transfer. If you're sure that you received a file but can't find it, you can search for it by doing the following: Click the Windows Start button. Select Find, then click Files or Folders. In the new window, type the name of the file in the "Named" field, then click the Find Now button. If the search doesn't return the file, ask your friend to send the file again.
Understanding security zones Internet Explorer divides your Internet world into zones, so that you can assign a Web site to a zone with a suitable security level. You can tell which zone the current Web page is in by looking at the right side of the Internet Explorer status bar. Whenever you attempt to open or download content from the Web, Internet Explorer checks the security settings for that Web site's zone. There are four zones: Internet zone: By default, this zone contains anything that is not on your computer or an intranet, or assigned to any other zone. The default security level for the Internet zone is Medium. You can change your privacy settings for the Internet zone on the Privacy tab in Internet Options. For more information, click Related Topics. Local intranet zone: This zone typically contains any addresses that don't require a proxy server, as defined by the system administrator. These include sites specified on the Connections tab, network paths (such as \\computername\foldername), and local intranet sites (typically addresses that don't contain periods, such as http://internal). You can add sites to this zone. The default security level for the Local intranet zone is Medium, therefore, Internet Explorer will allow all cookies from Web sites in this zone to be saved on your computer and read by the Web site that created them. Trusted sites zone: This zone contains sites you trust-sites that you believe you can download or run files from without worrying about damage to your computer or data. You can assign sites to this zone. The default security level for the Trusted sites zone is Low, therefore, Internet Explorer will allow all cookies from Web sites in this zone to be saved on your computer and read by the Web site that created them. Restricted sites zone: This zone contains sites you don't trust-sites that you're not sure whether you can download or run files from without damage to your computer or data. You can assign sites to this zone. The default security level for the Restricted sites zone is High, therefore, Internet Explorer will block all cookies from Web sites in this zone. In addition, any files already on your local computer are assumed to be very safe, so minimal security settings are assigned to them. You cannot assign a folder or drive on your computer to a security zone. You can change the security level for a zone; for example, you might want to change the security setting for your Local intranet zone to Low. Or, you can customize the settings within a zone. You can also customize settings for a zone by importing a privacy settings file from a certificate authority. To set a security level for each zone In Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Internet Options. Click the Security tab, and then click the zone that you want to set the security level for. Under Security level for the zone, select Default Level to use the default security level for the zone, or click Custom Level, and then select the settings you want. Note For Restricted sites, you need to click Custom Level and then click a level in the Reset to list. To assign a Web site to a security zone In Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Internet Options. Click the Security tab, and then click a security zone: Local intranet zone, Trusted sites zone, or Restricted sites zone. Click Sites. If you clicked Local intranet, click Advanced. In the Add this Web site to the zone text box, type the Internet address for the Web site that you want to add to this zone, and then click Add. Notes You cannot add Web sites to the Internet zone, which includes everything that does not belong to any other zone and is not on your local computer. To remove a Web site from a zone, complete steps 1 through 4. In the Web sites list box, click the name of the Web site you want to remove, and then click Remove. If you want Internet Explorer to verify that the server for each Web site in this zone is secure before connecting to any Web sites in this zone, select the Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone check box
