Storyteller notes:
The idea of forming "crucible group Alpha" was meant to give the players the feeling that they stood out somehow among everyone else in the Orpheus group. Thus, even if there were senior members as represented by the NPCs (such as Kate Denisson), the group would have the in-character reason to feel that they can make a difference somehow in the larger scheme of things.

The first night out was an impromptu mission intended for the players to get a feel of how the rules regarding projecting, intangiability and manifestation works. Also, it allowed them to explore using Dead Eyes, Misery Loves Company and other innate abilities.

Their second night out represents Mission #0766 in the main book where a Theater is supposedly haunted by what could be the ghost of an actress named Regina White who vanished in mysterious circumstances. In my game, I opted to have the presence of Lost Boys there as a hint of things to come, as well as a hint of one Spectre Horror called Virus (in the game, a Lost Boy emerges from inside Regina White). In one simple mission, I gave the players a frightening idea of what it feels like to face ghosts, spectres as well as the fear of knowing a ghost "might" contain a Spectre within it. The second mission also forces the group to realise there is a great need to develop the crucible's ties to one another.

Andrew Everard's discovery of being HIV postive echoes the fact that Tom Hayes as well is a survivor of a terminal illness as well. Though Andrew, the players get a subtle hint that somehow illnesses that should be killing them have seemingly stopped the moment they started working in Orpheus.

Though the name Bishop reappears during the sessions (either through NPCs who warn about it, or passing remarks from some of the senior agents who tell the players not to believe in such things), it is not til the third actual mission that an encounter with Bishop happens. When the crucible investigates on the mayor's wife who might have an affair with someone, they uncover instead that the wife is a user of pigment, that this Bishop guy may be her supplier, and that this Bishop guy is definitely either a ghost or a projector like themselves.

Also in this scene, Vincent Fiorello's hidden past (being in Marion State Penitentiary before it burned, as well as having the mayor as a patron) are hinted at for players to realise that not all of them have been that open to one another. A slight amount of distrust goes a long way in a horror game.

Soon, the game begins to have a cat-and-mouse feel as some players opt to start digging for some information regarding things Orpheus may be keeping secret. Files on Spectres are gathered and sent to dummy accounts in the internet for later retrieval. And some agents even move about in the building, taking advantage of the lack of adequate security currently installed. Again, a few foreshadowing of things that may prove disastrous in the future.

A new member of the crucible joins at this point when a new players opts to be part of the game. To give him a quick feel of things, Chet Mason gives him some tips as they tackle the mission #0844 (renumbered as #0792 for continuity sake) in the Crusade of Ashes book. Successfully helping the soul reach Salvation, the group learns the main benefit of saving Ghosts, and that is the weakening of Spite.

The mission in Chains obviously is Mission #0770 in the main book, but rather than keep it a plain mission, I opted to push it forwards to give a touch of what trouble the media can bring as well as the danger of how Spectres might be more intelligent than expected. For continuity, the mission was renumbered as #0796. The Celebrity Jonestown becomes a major thorn when the players realise that some people would hire agents to set them up in situations to get them on camera. And sadly, when Amelia Waldemar gets too drunk to realise what she is doing, Amelia exposes her connections to Orpheus as well as gives the large number of pigment users in the audience a show of how she projects and uses her Horrors.

By the time the Fetches arrive, and the agents do discover a real ghost hiding in Chains, the senior crucible arrives to help the group at the price of fumigating the ghost. Considering this said ghost (Lily, in the main book) was relating much with Amelia, the players can only worry about how this event will affect her considering her martyr streak and desire to help the ghost transcend. But when Chet Mason was faced with the choice of watching a pack of Fetches tear down the crucible while they bought Amelia time to help the ghost Lily transcend, or to take down Lily and give the projectors enough time to escape, he chose the best option he saw.

Of course, the epilogue is intended to lead events to Crusade of Ashes. Although when that actually comes remains to be seen.

Main questions in players' minds:

  • Who is Bishop? How can he do these things? What happened in the Marion State Penitentiary? Why did it burn down?
  • What is pigment? Does it really allow others to see ghosts and projected people? Who is making it?
  • Where are the ghosts that existed more than 3 years ago? Did something happen? Did they go somewhere?
  • What are the Spectres? Why is Orpheus secretive about them? Where are they coming from? What do they want?
  • What kind of shade is Annie Harper? Are there other shades than the basic ones (Banshee, Haunter, Poltergeist, Skin Rider, Wisp)?
  • Is there something in relation to the terminal illness' and the halting of their activity upon joining Orpheus?
  • What about the bad dreams?
  • What is Terrel and Squibb and why hasn't anyone heard more about them?

Main things Players have learned

  • Lament, Shade and Horrors
  • Basics of Benefits
  • Spectres: Lost Boys, Fetches, Frighteners, Reapers, Jasons
  • Kirlian security cameras are off-line
  • Tom Hayes and Andrew Everard both had terminal sicknesses that halted when they joined Orpheus
  • Orpheus is hiding information regarding Spectres
  • Bishop is real and has at least two artifacts (a Thunderbird car, an Ithaca shotgun) and has something to do with pigment
  • The Mayor knows Vincent Fiorello personally and had him transferred before the Marion State Penitentiary fire
  • There is another firm dealing with Projectors called Terrel and Squibb
