Very interesting couple ^_^ Yes indeed. But before I start, I want to say that my opinion/explanation on these two is mostly based upon theories and what I think is going on. It may defer for another person, but I believe my theories, and thus opinions, are pretty accurate.
Anyway, first let's start with everybody's favorite delinquent monk: Miroku! This relationship is more or less his doing, whether it be intentional or unintentional. Why? I'll get to that, but let me decipher his character a tad to make it clearer. See, at first glance, he's a pervert. Ah, yes, 'tis true, he is one (a cheer for the anime perverts!), but that's not his full character. Uh huh, you read right, he's not a total pervert, he's like any other male only he's more direct about it…ahem…moving on…
From his first appearance in Vol. 6 *alone*, you can already tell he lies, deceives, manipulates and tricks people for a hobby. (Which is strange, because he is a monk o_O Hooboy, I won't even get into that) And in case you haven't noticed yet, he plays Sango like a puppet with strings. How does he do it? Simple: his groping. What? Don't believe me? Let's walk this through…Miroku comes to talk with Sango, Sango doesn't trust Miroku, Miroku somehow manages to make her feel somewhat comfortable around him and drops her guard. He then gropes her (people call this his death wish…) and BOOM! Sango beats him to a bloody pulp, but not only that. See, each tie that he does that, Sango's guard shoots back up, way up, higher then before. "And why would he do something like that?" you might be saying. Simple, he cares for her (…duh). This is where one of my theories come in…
Miroku's mother and grandmother were never mentioned, so we can only assume what happened to them. Personally, I think they both died in result to *something* related to the Kazaana. Miroku's grandfather probably must have thought it was bad luck, same goes for Miroku's father, but I think our dear delinquent monk can add one and one is two. If this theory is correct, he would have this fear of perhaps endangering the woman that would bear his child to die.
Which brings us back to Sango, Miroku doesn't want her to die, whether it be as a companion or something more. Scrap as a companion, I think he really does care for her, so he doesn't want her to die, period. That's why he keeps bringing her guard up higher and higher, to make sure she would become so distrustful of him that she wouldn't fall for him (though I think he's letting her fall for him a *little*, you know, just for his sick amusement ^_^). Also something to mention: if Miroku would have asked Sango to bear his child, that would have made a HUGE whole in his groping routine. (You honestly think he actually "forgot" to ask her?)
Sango is pretty much in denial, because she doesn't *want* to care *that* much for a perverted priest, but honestly, don't you think she's getting too jealous and worried over him lately? =)
So in the end line, Miroku wants to be with Sango, too scared to though, and Sango is his little puppet that's falling more and more into his hands…in a literal as well as metaphorical sense…hehe
