| Try to imagine being a superheroine and a mom at the same time. So there you are, chasing after Dr. Maniacal from Adventures of Nebula, when your pager goes off. Seems the babysitter's locked herself out of the house again. "Just wonderful," you think, because on top of that you know you have half a gallon of mint choclate chip ice cream melting in back of your minivan and you're getting a run in your leotard (not very becoming on modern superwomen). Not to mention you have to land the bad guys in jail and change, brush your hair (because stopping those late-night |
| heists may be great for your figure but they're heck on your hair) by six because your daughter's recital is at seven and you've got to pick your son up from soccer practice at eight. Doesn't work out very well, does it? Plus you're getting too old for this, your mom wants to know why you never call, your date can't understand that your a working mom, and the sink is backed up. So when your spunky teenaged sister tells you your crime busting style is SO 1980's you say "That's it! That's fine! I give! No way! I am never crimefighting again, NEVER!" and you don't. (Except for that one time when Pastryman kidnaps your daughter-- but that's it! The LAST time--Ever!). |
| And that's pretty much what happened to Illutiana--except for that run in the leotard bit, she doesn't wear leotards, I just added that for dramatic emphasis. Illutiana quit the crimefighting biz because she had two small children to look after and no matter what, they came first (as it should be with any good parent, right?). But this meant she needed to find a job. So Illy tried her hand at teaching, then at painting, then sewing (she was, after all, a bit of the old-fashioned type), before settling into the career she's in now. Writing. I've said so before, but in case you weren't paying attention, I'll say it again. Illiana is one of those super saccharrine columnists who writes stories about how peace on earth is achieveable if we all just get along, how being a mother is the best thing that's ever happened to her--even though it did "cost me my convertible (i'm gonna kill those kids)", and about how love can save our rain forests (you know the type). From here on it was just a short skip to what she is now. Mainly a normal single mom with two rambunctious children. But it was a bit of a rocky road there for a while. I mean as a character she might have ended up as Nebula! |
