Demmy
2000
Well, there I was, coasting along on the road to fame at a nice even pace of about 6 mph happily waving at any opportunity that may have happened slowly through my line of vision without really looking at it. This was when Kellee (who I am eternally grateful to) stepped directly in front of my vehicle dressed in neon crossguard orange and redirected me on to the road of cartooning, and, as if the mud had been suddenly wiped from the windshield, it all became clear to me. Of course at the time I had no idea the road would be so long or bumpy, filled with unexpected twists, and turns, and pot holes, or that halfway through my car would over heat and Id have to get a jump from a friendly passer by. In fact, as of today (2003) Im still not getting paid for this, but I swear I can see a town over that next horizon, or is that just another mirage?
Demmy was already the main character of my story, such as it was, but people kept pushing me to change her. Make her human was a popular suggestion, but Demmy just didnt look right human. Its easy to imagine, she looked exactly like herself, only. . . well, pink, but something didnt feel right. It seemed to zap her imagination and uniqueness, so in the end Demmy remained basically as she was. I did round her ears, though. If you look back at my old picks her ears are SHARP! You could impale yourself on them! I thought slightly rounding their point would make her seem. . . . Less threatening, maybe less weird. (Candace may feel differently) Then there was the matter of her age. . .
Demmy had progressed in six years to about the age of 12 or so. For the comic I wanted to relive her whole childhood, from infancy up, but that wasnt really appropriate. By that method I would have to wait 12 years until I was up to present, and I certainly didnt have the patience for that. I decided, kind of arbitrarily, on the age of seven. I wanted a child that was still young enough to be innocent and full of mischief, but old enough to communicate clearly and wonder about the big questions. So Demmy became seven (but youll notice her hair style and fashion sense remained as it was when she was in 1999). Basically that was all I changed. Its strange, but because Demmy was the main character she required the least amount of revamping. (Almost done! ^_^O)
