                       Artwork in the traditional style

I studied drawing and painting for a number of years with Harold Stevenson and Alma Gallanos - both successful artists as well as instructors. The first few years were basic drawing and anatomy then studies in the life class in oil paint. I eventually gravitated to pastels - here's four of those studies. Each is about 8 hours work from the model. Three are pastel, the one below is oil paint.

"The Rabbis" is unique in that it's an oil but done in black and white, and exclusively with pallete knives - no brushes. I liked the results, it's been hanging over my mantle for longer than I like to think about, but I never cared to try B&W or brushless again. . .

This oil still life started out as a session to practice drapery and reflected light but turned out to be a picture worth hanging. In fact, it's won a prize. You can just see the yellow reflected light from the brand new pencils feeling it's way through the opaque milk glass. . . . .

Riverhead - pastel If you know Long Island you might recognize the shore of the North Fork. I've done a several of these - it's almost a formula picture by now, but it's nice to know they're hanging in a number of homes.

I really like this one. Again, it started as an exercise in capturing light that worked well enough to frame and hang! I wish you could see the high light on the finger tips of the original. Finger tips glow and the light literally oozes down the fingers and into the palms . . . . .
