Thailand
Local transportation, the longtail. This is how, after a 20 hour bus ride from southern Malaysia, we finally made it to Rai Lay beach outside Krabi in southern Thailand.
A bad scan, but you get the picture. Taken from way on top of a stupid mountain that stupid me decided needed to be climbed. Anyway, our bungalow was off the beach on the far right side of the picture. You can see the longtail boats anchored in the shallows.
Our bungalows and the landscaping. I think that if you just let the greenery go, it ends up looking much like this anyway. Very nice.
There are lots of things to spend your money on here.
This fellow came to visit one morning and eat up the bread that the neighbors had thrown out. He was about 33 lbs. and calm as could be. He didn't like the crust.
Monica, Kristen, Tara (Australia), and Andy (UK) at the filming site for "The Beach". What you can't see is the garbage washed up on the beach itself. The lagoon, however, is spectacular.
These lagoons are on the same island as the filming site but don't have any beaches. They are very nice though, with only about 2 - 3 feet of water and tall cliffs all around.
Also on this island are the caves where birds nests are collected for bird's nest soup. Villagers live on and around the island on floating platforms to guard the nests and their claim. Shooting wars sometimes erupt over the right to harvest from certain areas of the caves. The nests are sold in China, where they fetch huge money as the main ingredient in the soup. Uhhhh, no thanks.
Monica and Kristen went for an elephant ride while in Phuket.
This was a big old pain in the butt.  Getting the film developed, finding a scanner, the proper software and the time to do this has been hard. My updates are too rare!

Phuket  (that's Poo-Ket)
This is the gang that survived the trip to PP Ley; at the Apache bar, celebrating the fact that we were still alive.
An armada of longtails waits to whisk you to nearby beaches and islands.
Calling it a taxi was a bit generous.
