Mel's Walk
The Gamma Chi Chapter held the 3rd annual Melissa's Walk. The Walk began in 2001 in honor of our sister, Melissa Steckler. She completed her first year at Ball State as an Education major. After an accident during the summer of 2001, Mel spent her last few months in the burn unit at Riley's Children's Hospital in Indianapolis where she passed away on July 31st.

The money raised by this event goes directly to Riley's Burn Unit. Some of the money also goes towards a Delta Zeta scholarship available to Delta Zeta sisters all around Indiana.

More than 200 people participated in the 3 mile walk/run around campus. Through this, we were able to raise over $3,500. We are very pleased with the continued support and involvement from alumni, family, friends, and the Greek community.

Mel's family attended the brief, yet emotional indroduction ceremony before the walk and finished with us at Mel's Tree; a tree planted by the men of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity in her loving memory.

We plan on continuing this event every year to keep Mel's memory alive and to help other children in the burn unit at Riley's. Her family is grateful to the Gamma Chi chapter for all we have done, just as we are grateful to them for sharing the gift of their daughter with us. We look foward to another successful walk next year and hope to see out alumni and friends come and support us once again.

Turtle Tugs
Turtle Tugs 2003 was held on Friday, April 11 at Emerson Park and was a huge success. Turtle Tugs is our annual spring philanthropy event in which we raise money for Gallaudet University, the only nationally accredited university for the speech and hearing inpaired. A portion of the money raised from the event will go to establish a scholarship through Delta Zeta headquarters as well.

A lot of time and hard work was put into this and it certainly paid off. 25 teams participated in 4 events: volleyball, crazy relay race, oversized water balloon toss, and the most popular tug-o-war, all of which were held over vats of green Jell-O. I am safe to say that no one came out of these game clean!

Including the Gamma Chi's, around 300 people were at Turtle Tugs to either watch or participate. We gave away several gift certificates, a cell phone, satellite dish, and many other items that were donated from various businesses to encourage students to attend. In the end, a total of $3,500 was raised. Thanks for all the support and we hope to see everyone there next year!
Haunted House
Nightmare on Riverside!
The Ball State Turtles picked up another Philanthropy this year. The men of Sigma Phi Epsilon asked us to pair with them for there fall money raisor, a haunted house. The DZ's and Sig Ep's spent the month of October putting together ideas and themes for the different rooms. There were many different themes like the "Jason Room", the "Cornfield Room", the "Clown Room", the "Scary Doll Room", and even a Morgue.
All the hard work paid off in the end. The Haunted House, which ran from October 27-31 raised over $5,000. All the proceeds went towards both Riley's Hospital and to Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
