STARFUCKERS (inc.?)

~somewhere in America
Marilyn sat lazily on the big couch in his best
friend’s appartment and reached for the tv remote control, which was lying
on a little table hidden beneath some scattered music magazines. He lifted
the cover of one of them, the weight of the pages twisting it dangerously.
“Humm…,” his throat spoke as his eyes examined
his own face staring at him.
The other man in the room leaned over his shoulder
and took the cover out of his hand, lifting it until it ripped off the
rest of the pages.
“Heee, you lost an arm!”
“Who the fuck cares?” He sank back on the couch
and pushed the upper button on the remote control. A series of channels
began flashing on the screen, his thumb nervously searching for something
worth watching.
“Mari-baby, you look simply awful in those glittery
red clothes,” his tongue searched for the back of the cigarette hanging
from his lips as he spoke. “And that flashy red makeup…” His lips closed
tightly to take a deep puff. “How COULD you!?!”
Marilyn turned his head to face his friend, who
was now sitting on the back top of the couch, almost on his shoulder. “Shut
up, Trent, that was the past –HEY!” his eyes drifted back to the tv as
a well known song began filling the smoky air.
“U-hu! Great song,” Trent began humming the melody
he himself had composed.
“STARSUCKERS”
“And great video,” Marilyn added when his disguised
figure appeared on the screen. He faced his friend again, “What would you
have done without me?” A wide black-framed smirk lighted his white face.
Trent looked back at him, threw the cover away
and punched his mate’s cheek. “What would _you_ have done withouth me?
Already forgot who brought you up?”
“Eeeeh, take it easy, man,” Marilyn’s hand took
the other off his cheek. “’Course didn’t forget, and, you see?, that was
the past. Now look at the beautiful me sitting there in your car on the
video…”
“The beautiful you, yeah, Mari-baby,” he sent
him a mocking kiss through the air.
Marilyn rolled his eyes, grabbed Trent’s neck
and pulled him until their lips met for a hungry kiss. Then he decided
tocenter again on the video playing, but the cover of another magazine
caught his eye. “Mmmh? What’s this?” His hand reached for the bunch of
pages glued together and he interestingly examined the strange bright cover,
full of crazy chicken scratch. “Chinese?”
“Japanese!” Trent laughed at the surprised look
of his friend.
“SHOXX”
“I’m glad you still know how to read,” he grinned
as Marilyn crossed his leather-clad long legs and stuck his tongue out.
“It’s one of Japan’s best music magazines,” he added.
“And since when do you read Japanese?”
“You know I don’t. But it’s fun to look at the
way they dress… Some of them are cool, really!”
Marilyn arched an eyebrow inquiringly, his forefinger
poking at the face of a guy with spiky blue hair who looked at him from
the cover, the big letters next to him reading ‘GLAY’. “Cool?” The reamining
eyebrow joined the other high up his forehead. “You call _this_ cool?”
Trent reached for the magazine. “I said SOME
of them look cool,” (elenity: GOMEN hisashi-san… for me u look great!)
he began flapping the pages quickly. “Lemme see… Here! Take a look at this,”
he handed the magazine again to the what-the-hell-did-you-just-do looking
figure.
Marilyn let his eyes wander over the two-page
picture: 5 guys dressed in a quite gothic way (especially three of them),
each one with a different color hanging from their heads and a thick makeup
sticking to their faces.
“So, what do you think now?” he patted his shoulder.
“Yeah, cool…,” he placed his feet on the couch
so that the magazine resting on his knees came closer to his eyes. “Dir
En Grey…” He spoke the words out slowly, savouring the syllables as his
left little finger ran over the picture of one of them, a tall purple-haired
guy wearing long dark gothic nets and leathers, a pair of shorts which
showed the full lenght of his endless legs (he decided not to think about
the guy’s taste for tights), and a pair of little demon-wings. “Cool…”
“I knew you were going to like that little angel-looking
whore!” Trent laughed, “A real demon! But I prefer that one,” he pointed
the guy standing next to the other one, blue hair falling over his shoulders,
his strong jaw perfectly defined by his slight tilted head.
“And how do they sound?”
Trent blinked.
“U-hu,” Marilyn waved a hand in front of his
startled friend’s eyes. “Did you hear me?”
“I did, but…”
“But?”
“Well…,” he coughed, “I haven’t got the faintest
idea. But you know, they are Japanese, so it has to be that ‘tling-tling-ping’
thing…”
“Typical from you!” he laughed. He stood up suddenly,
making the couch move dangerously backwards due to Trent’s weight on its
back top, and headed towards the computer. “So let’s find out”
“Hey be careful!” Trent shouted as he tried to
regain stability.
For a while both surfed around the internet trying
to find any information, mp3 or mpeg about the 5 guys, but all the pages
they discovered were written in an unanaderstandable mix of little strokes.
“Fuckin’ Chinese…”
“It’s Japanese”
“Oh well, whatever…”
“Nevermind”
“Uh?”
“You forgot the third part!”
“Ou shutup!!” *rolls eyes*
(elenity: errrr… stupid tribute to my dear Nirvana…
*runs away before the tomatos thrown from the crowd hit her*)
(*coughs*)
Soooo, after about an hour of frustrated search,
they ended up on a page also written in unreadable language, but with a
few nice-looking hyperlinks.
“Do you think we should try one of these?”
“Maybe they’ll just take us to another page like
this”
“Or maybe they’ll give us a mp3”
“So try then”
Marilyn clicked on the hyperlink and a mysterious
file began downloading into Trent’s computer.
“Did you see how’s the file called?” Trent asked
as the little blue bricks began to fill the download bar.
“Think it was something like ‘san’, or ‘zan’…”
Marilyn pouted
“And what the hell does that mean?”
“And how the hell should I know?”
“But you’ve been touring around Japan!”
“You too!”
“But you are going to tour Japan next week so
you should be learning something!!”
“U just forgot i’m touring with you?”
Their trascendental conversation about such a
metaphysic issue was drawn to an end as the ‘beep’ meaning ‘download complete’
echoed in the dark room. Marilyn blinked.
“That’s it?” he asked, “SO fast?”
Trent laughed and looked lovingly at his computer,
“That’s the benefit of installing optic fibre!”
Marilyn pouted jealously. “Guess I should install
it also when they come around my building…”
“Ok now, let’s take a look at what we just downloaded.”
Trent pushed Marilyn over the edge of the chair and sat on the little space,
taking the mouse out of his hand and taking complete control of his computer.
“Now’s my turn”
“Hey, be careful!” Marilyn shouted.
He looked for the file and clicked four times
on it, first two to decompress it and last two to open it. After a few
seconds, the media player flashed on the screen and it went blank for an
instant as the programm switched automatically into full-screen mode.
“Guess we have a video thi-“
His words were cut by the music starting to play,
the images filling the screen…
The room remained dark and silent for almost a
minute, the time both needed to take in the mix of images and sound they
had just seen.
“…”
“Huh?”
Marilyn blinked and leant backward on the chair,
an arm on his friend’s shoulder to balance his weight and not fall to the
floor. “Wasn’t that bad, don’t you think?”
“No, not bad at all…” He ran a finger through
his hair and placed behind his left ear the rebell string of long hair
sticking to his eyes.
“I think you should change you mind about Chinese
music being ‘pling-cling-ting’”
“’tling-tling-ping’”, Trent corrected.
“Ok,” Marilyn rolled his eyes, “Then about Chinese
music bei-“
“Japanese music”, Trent cut him.
Marilyn stirred nervously on the chair, “Nevermind.”
“Now you forgot the first t-“
“SHUT THE HELL UP!!!”, Marilyn shouted, his teeth
gnashing as he stood up, pushed Trent on the couch and jumped on him.
~somewhere in Japan
“Ok, Kaoru,” Yoshiki yawned and started looking
for the key of his room inside the pockets of his tight leather pants.
“Was nice to have some drinks together, ne…” He yawned again and giggled
as he found the small piece of metal. He held it up high proudly.
“Yeah,” Kaoru smiled back, “was nice!” He wondered
if their drunk producer would be able to get to his room or if he would
fall asleep somewhere on the way. “Hum, Yoshiki-san…” the older man giggled
at the sound of his name in his numb ears, “Should I…”
“Don’t worry, Kaoru-chaaaan,” he turned around
and started his way towards the end of the corridor, dangerously swaying
and bouncing from wall to wall, “I’m not _that_ drunk. See you tomorraaawww…
*giggle*”
Kaoru faced his door and looked for his own key,
thinking how would Yoshiki look like if he were _that_ drunk… He smiled
at the thought, surely they would discover sooner or later. Though, now
that Hide was no longer around, the man had built a shell around him and
didn’t go out to have fun as often as before; everybody knew about the
parties X Japan used to make, and about the parties the couple had given
in LA the time they had lived there together…
Wishing that Yoshiki would recover completely
from the loss on some day, he closed his eyes, sighed and entered
the room, closing the door carefully behind him.
“Toshiya?” Kaoru asked, blinking painfully into
the darkness that filled the room they were suppossed to share in that
hotel.
“Shhhhh,“ was all the response he got. The voice
had come out from the corner of the room where the sofa was placed, so
he directed his eyes there and dicovered the slim figure of the bassist
curled up on the floor, his back leaning against the arm of the sofa, watching
a dark series of images flashing on tv.
“What are you watching?” he asked in a low tone
as he approached him.
“Come, Kaoru-chan,” Toshiya waved an absent hand
at him, his face fixed on the tv, the light coming from it lightening his
sweet features. “A great video.”
Kaoru sat next to his friend on the floor and
tried to center his attention on the dark images, discovering it was Nine
Inch Nails’ last video. There was the dark Trent Reznor on a car with a
blonde girl, then playing at some freak attraction, and finally back int
he car with the girl… but… wait a moment… was that…
“…,” was all Kaoru could say when they video
finished.
Toshiya smiled at him warmly, his purple hair
caressing his shoulders as he turned to face him. “So that means you hadn’t
seen the video before?”
“No…”
“You should have!” He drew closer to Kaoru and
rested his head on his shoulder. “I’m so glad that he finally went back
to his dark looks and ended up his glam-era…”
Kaoru shook his head to help the image of the
beautiful girl turining into Mr. Manson go away. Once achieved, he switched
the tv off and picked up his half asleep friend, bringing him to the bed.
“Do you know they are going to tour around Japan together? They play in
Tokyo next week.”
Toshiya sighed and lifted his sleepy eyes to
meet Kaoru’s. “Ne, Kaoru-chan, wanna go with me to the concert?”
Kaoru blinked, startled at the mischivious glint
of evil he thought he had just seen behind the veil of sleep. “Of course
I’ll go with you, you know how much I like them.”
As he placed his already sleeping friend on the
bed, he remembered the video and blinked again, this time as he discovered
that very same glint coming to his eyes. ‘Is this the reaction?’ he thought,
‘Interesting…”
He undressed and crawled under the sheets, drifting
into sleep with the image of a leather-clad figure dancing in his head
and singing… something which sounded like ‘starfuckers’. A smile came to
his lips.
~somewhere in Tokyo
“GOOD NIGHT TOKYO!!!!!” Trent shouted, the crowd
at his feet screaming back. It was a long time since they had last played
in Japan, and now he regretted not having come more often to the land of
the cheering crowd. Simply incredible, how the people supported them and
jumped like crazy at all the songs… even if they didn’t know them… even
if they didn’t understand a word! Because, he was sure, 95% of the ones
screaming back right now had surely not idea of what he had just said.
Going back to Prehistoria, to the meaningless shouting… to Prehysteria!!
He grabbed the microphone out of the stick which
had held it up high and placed both hands on his hips, remembrances of
hundreds of concerts scooting through his mind, of thousands –millions!
of people screaming madly at whatever he did or said, and he came to the
conclusion that not only Japan, but the whole world had gone back to Prehysteria.
Nodding in agreement with his thoughts, he looked
for something on the left rear pocket of his black leather pants: a small
sheet of paper with something written, a few sentences made up mainly of
consonant-vocal-consonant-vocal sequences. As he narrowed his eyes and
approached the piece to his face, he wished he had had a better idea than
to put it in one of his pockets. He should have foreseen the heat and sweat
would blurr the writing… but it looked unreadable to him even when it was
clean and neat, so it wasn’t such a stupid decision then…
“I-IMA… uh… err… wa-WATS… eeeem… WATAH…,” he
took the microphone away from his mouth and cursed loudly, he cursed not
only the damned paper, but the damned fact that the world had different
languages. He coughed to clear his throat, “I-MA-WA-TA-Ssss… uh??” He felt
completely stupid staring at the meaningless lines of words, so ‘what the
fuck’ he thought and threw the paper away. When it reached the floor, he
looked at it with the corner of his eye and stepped on it with all his
weight. He smiled and looked at the never shutting up crowd. Hell, that
was one of the best concerts ever, if only they could share some understanding…
“So!” he said in English, not caring anymore
about nobody understanding him. Luckily someone would rememeber the school
lessons and translate to the rest… “I have a little surprise for you!!”
The crowd roared back, he wondered if in anticipation or if just because
they were used to. “This is our newest single, ‘STARSUCKERS INC.’,” this
time the crowd cheered louder, which implied they had recognised the name.
He grinned. “And an old friend of mine is going to join me tonight…”
The lights went off, only the flames of a few
candles showing Trent was still there, and suddenly he was not alone anymore.
A ghostly light fell from the ceiling up onto the two figures standing
together near the edge of the stage. One was Trent, clad in black leather
from head to toe, his long sweaty hair sticking to his forehead and cheeks,
a micro in his right hand, the left resting on his hip. The other was a
taller man wearing a black net shirt, a black long skirt with a big cut
along its left side which showed his long legs, and black boots; long black
straight hair surrounded his peculiar white face, black eye shadow drawing
a mask from temple to temple, one contact linse deep blue, the other deep
crimson, his lips pitch black.
The ghostly light kept on falling over Trent,
but it changed into a bloody red for the other man as his head tilted jerkily,
his lips grimaced letting his white teeth flash, and his arm raised, little
and forefinger escaping from the tight fist.
The crowd shouted even louder and, slowly, their
ancient roar turned into a kind of ‘me-a-lin’ scream when they recognized
Marilyn Manson as the man standing next to Trent Reznor on stage.
“STARSUCKERS!!!!”
‘Starsuckers?’ Kaoru watched as Toshiya screamed
and bounced around, perfectly mixing with the crowd, and remembered the
night he had seen the video for the song for the first time. ‘Starfuckers’,
he had thought then… He stared at the two men on stage, blushing slightly
at the repetition of the misunderstood word in his head. His eyes drifted
from Mr. Manson to Trent, one of his favourite singers ever, and he turned
a deeper shade of pink, so he decided to concentrate on the first.
“STARSUCKERS!!!”
The skirt flew around him every time he stopped
his wild run around the stage by placing a foot on a speaker, and he didn’t
seem in a hurry to make it hang properly from his waist. He moved his body
so that it left one of his legs completely bare, sometimes even both, and
his fingers began tracing the path from his ankle to his knee, to his upper
thigh, then turning inwards to reach his…
Kaoru shook his head and looked again at Toshiya,
who glared dreamily at the scene. He smiled and patted his friend on the
back without obtaining any response.
“That guy’s really some kind of walking porn”,
Kaoru said in a low voice. The associations his mind made with the ‘walking
porn’ turned to draw a picture of Sugizo, and his lips curved in what was
the beginning of a smirk as he thought of the unsane pairing that black-clad
whore and the promiscuous guitarist from Luna Sea would make.
“I’m straight, you know.”
Kaoru’s heart almost jumped out of his chest
when he heard the unexpected words. He turned his head to face the dark
sunglasses of a pouting pink-haired figure dressed in jeans and a black
long-sleeve MM t-shirt. After the first shock, he laughed out loud.
“Yeah, I know! You’re a straight as a winding
road!” He paused for a moment in order to watch as the older man placed
his hands on his hips and opened his mouth in an offended way, but he didn’t
let him time to say a word. “The way Ryu kisses you on stage and that week
you disappeared together with Hakuei show us how straight you are!”
The pink-haired man cleared his throat and blushed
so that his skin matched his hair color. “Euuuuh, that’s the past, eeerrrr…”
He turned away from the grinning blue-haired guy and looked to the stage,
regaining composture. “Well, I just wanted to say,” he started, “that I’m
not interested on that goth. Tell your little bouncing friend that he can
do with him whatever he wants.” He cocked his head towards Kaoru, lifted
his sunglasses to let a conspiratorial eyebrow look at him for an instant,
and flashed his lucifer smile before desappearing, engulfed by the crowd.
Kaoru stared for a while blankly into nowhere,
then slapped his own cheek to come back to reality. The last song of the
night, that ‘Starsuckers inc.’, was about to finish, and with it the concert,
so his mind had to start functioning quickly if they wanted to meet the
two men on stage. Though he and Toshiya were stars in Japan, being Dir
En Grey one of the most famous bands in the moment, if not the most, their
names meant surely nothing to any American, so nobody would let them get
to the backstage. If it had been the concert of any Japanese band, things
would have been much easier… if only they had hired any as a supporting
band…
A little yellow bulb lighted over his head and
he smiled widely, grabbing an startled Toshiya by the arm and driving him
as fast as he could through the crowd towards the first raw.
“Hey!” Toshiya screamed, rubbing the sore spot
in his arm where Kaoru’s fingers had left a white mark which was quickly
turning red. “What the hell are you doing?”
He drew the purple head closer and talked directly
to his ear in order to make himself understood over the loud volume of
the speaker next to them. “Do you wanna meet them?” The bassist nodded,
so he went on. “Ok, so start jumping and screaming what you imagine the
lyrics for the song are as loud as you can. Just try to make them notice
we are here and we are worth meeting at the backstage. It’s desperate,
but it’s our only chance!”
“Ok!” Toshiya grinned, and both started doing
so.
Trent approached Marilyn and poked him in the
ribs. “You won’t believe it, Mari-darling”
Marilyn let the skirt fling around his long legs
and turned to face the owner of that interesting tone. “Huh?”
Trent wrapped his right arm over his friend’s
shoulders and kissed his lips soundly next to the microphone, the crowd
screaming crazily at what they thought was characteristic of Japanese bands
only. He placed their cheeks together and laughed inwardly at the grin
in the other man’s face.
“Do you remember the photo on that magazine at
my place?”
Marilyn cocked his head. “You mean the Chinese
one?”
“Japanese”
“Oh, well, whatev- “
“Nevermind!!”
“HEY STOP IT!!!” Marilyn tried to sound angry,
but the laugh coming form the other man made his voice choke with laughter.
“Yeah, I rememer it… and?”
“Well,” Trent choked, “Just take a look at the
firs raw,” he pointed with his forfinger, “Just at at your feet”
Marilyn followed the direction of that black
nail and blinked as he recognized the two figures. “Hey! That’s the one
I pointed! The purple-haired little devil!”
“Yeah, together with the one I pointed,” Trent
looked into the amused eyes of his friend and both smiled, knowing they
were sharing the same thoughts.
Still snuggling up against each other, they approached
the verge of stage to finish the song.
“Starsuckers incorporated!”
They exchanged a last look and pointed to the
two Japanese guys in front of them, the last word of the song filling the
air:
“STARFUCKERS!!!!”
Kaoru and Toshiya grinned at each other as one of the huge bodyguards took them out of the crazy crowd, lifted them up in the air and headed towards the backstage. They still had time to turn around and take a last glance at the two figures on stage, who were looking at them with the evil face that anticipates a night full of fun…
