Sunday 29.July.2001 Norbreck Castle Hotel
On Sunday our morning was spent walking around town, because of Pauline's lack of interest in Star Trek, and to keep things fair so we didn't get to the convention until 1 o'clock intime for Kate Mulgrew's second talk. Which she started off by telling us how she meet her husband Tim again some of the questions asked were great.
A lady wished to thank Kate from the bottom of her heart for all the autographs she had been signing. (loud applause from the audience as Kate had signed over 3500 by the end of the weekend) and for the seven wonderful years on Voyager.
Kate: I promised you that everyone would get one. It's killing me because I would like to personalize every autograph, but it's just impossible, we'll never get through, we'll be here for months."
You and Robert Beltran had a wonderful alchemy on screen that I feel was wasted but after seven years. Do you personally know now what it was between you that came up so well on screen?' Kate: What it was between us that came up so well on screen? (laughs and applause from the audience) Kate: I think she answered her own question didn't she? Yes it's called chemistry, screen chemistry. We just had it. Of course he had it with anyone. He had it with any number of my gender, I've seen it. I mean that and I was sorry that we couldn't further explore it but I tried to explain myself yesterday. Those are perilous waters it wasn't my journey to make love madly to my first officer. I don't think it's fun to make love to ones' subordinates do you? He's awfully sexy though isn't he?"
after some more questions a small voice came over the mic, "Mrs Mulgrew, Mrs Mulgrew, who's your favourate Star Trek captain?" Unknown to Kate and everyone except a single tech member, was the fact that the question was asked by non other than Patrick Stewart, lucky for Kate she answered "Pickard" Kate was suposed to be off stage by 2pm. But put two Starfleet captains on stage for the first time and they WILL run over! WAY OVER!! but one of the best questions asked was...
Seeing you both there, I just wondered are you going to do a movie together?' Patrick Stewart: YYYYYYEEEEESSSSSS. Kate: That begs a question doesn't it? We couldn't both survive could we? (yes from the audience) Kate: No way, somebody always has to die. Patrick Stewart: But not a Captain. You could save me from death.Or maybe you wouldn't. Let him go, let him go! Kate: You on the other hand could save me by a fetlock. Patrick Stewart: I would love to do that. I would carry you out of a burning space ship. (cheers from the audience) Kate: That would work. We could have all the elements of Star Trek. Patrick, the rather understated romantic lead but what about Bill Shatner? We've got to get him in there somewhere."
So after an extra hour of Kate and Patrick the auction finally took off and a limited number of signed photo's of Patrick went of sale. Patrick started the auction by selling a champagne bottle from 'Generations', and a CIC video framed plaque to annouce the launch of 'Encounter at Farpoint'. When finished Robert Picardo and Robbie McNeil could do their joint talk, but i missed it as our wristband numbers came up on the large screen to tell us we could go get Kate's autograph. But due to the number of visitors and the fact that she promised everyone her autograph, it was one each, not personnalised and she looked exhursted poor woman.
We desided to get some food after recieving Kate's autograph which Pauline paid for as i had managed to spend all my money on souvenir's and had just enough to get back to the hotel with. We returned at 6pm for the video section, and the start of the other guests resuming the autograph's, after the videos came the raffle draw for something! and the prizes for the art competition, the winner was a clay model of Voyager, runners up where a picture of Tuvok, and second place was 'Trek in the Park' (Star Trek meets Southpark) There was a closing ceremony to finish things off and to thank both guest's and visitors, tech, and stewards, and the hall was closed of to everyone but those few still waiting for autographs, so the hall could be cleaned for the finnal disco.
Pauline and I sat and sacialised while we waited for our numbers, which finnaly came up at 9pm, and we joined the queue. It was hot and stuffy when we got upstairs and people left the queue to but photo's for the guests to sign if they needed them. the rules for the autographs where, your programme and one other item if you wished for signing. and you couldn't return to a guest once you had passed them, i surpose this was to ensure no one came back for more than allowed.
All the guests where friendly and great despite the heat and being tired. But most of all Robert Picardo, and Robbie McNeil who had spent most of the weekend bantering and winding each other up especially during each others talks. At one point while i was getting Robert Picardo's autograph McNeil tried out a fans scateboard and almost fell off, Robert Picardo told him not to make a fool of himself as that was his job, to which McNeil simply stuck his tongue out. I recieved everyones autograph except Fintan McKeown's as he had left for the toilet! we didn't stay for the disco which had already started when we got back downstairs, at 10:30pm as we where exhursted and Pauline had backache which was getting worse but she haad put up with it so i could get the autographs.
We had a great weekend and i'd love to do it again, which I probably will, not bad for my first holiday without parents. Look out world im loose!!!! Sundays Images
