Features

Attractive, Capsule Design
The Minolta Freedom Zoom Supreme EX DATE features a slim, smooth, and protective design for easy portability in a coat pocket, purse, or fanny pack. When the camera is turned off, the lens and flash retract completely into the camera body to form a unique rounded capsule weighing only 9.7 ounces (without batteries). In addition, a high-gloss silvertone covering creates a striking, high-quality appearance with added durability. For secure and comfortable handling, a black rubber patch is positioned on the grip, and the area surrounding the shutter-release button is ergonomically sculpted.

39-125mm (3.2X) Quad-Element Aspheric Zoom Lens
The compact 39-125mm zoom lens features Minolta’s exclusive four-element lens design with four aspherical surfaces. This design minimizes optical aberrations and creates a new level of compactness while providing beautiful, high-contrast images. The 39mm position offers a wider angle-of-view and is ideal for scenic landscapes or groups of people. The 125mm position zooms in close for distant subjects or portraits.

SLR-Type, Passive Autofocusing
The Freedom Zoom Supreme EX DATE uses a phase-detection autofocus system with up to 780 focusing steps, which is similar to the kind used in sophisticated interchangeable-lens (AF SLR) cameras. It focuses sharply from as close as 16.8 inches (in close-up mode) to infinity. Since there are no infrared focusing beams, the Supreme EX DATE can focus accurately on distant subjects, objects behind glass, or even mirror images.

Compact Zoom Viewfinder
The zoom-integrated viewfinder uses a dual-prism system which contributes to the overall sleek and clean design by keeping the viewfinder housing flush with the top of the camera body. In addition, the viewfinder’s optical system is also used by the metering system, eliminating the need for additional optics plus added size and weight.

Zoom-Integrated TTF (Through-the-Finder) Dual-Segment Metering

The metering system is linked optically to the viewfinder so the camera is always metering the same image that the photographer sees, at any focal length. This zoom-integrated, dual-area system takes separate readings from the subject and background areas, for accurate and consistent exposures even with backlit subjects.

Subject Program Selection
The Freedom Zoom Supreme EX DATE features a fully automatic point-and-shoot mode, plus three other exposure programs which custom-tailor the camera’s automatic systems for specific types of subjects or scenes. Selections are made by moving the data panel’s subject program pointer to the desired mode indicator.

Full Auto
Provides standard point-and-shoot operation for general photography. This mode is set automatically whenever the camera is turned on, or after a picture is taken using one of the subject programs. If the light is low, the built-in flash will fire automatically.

Close-Up
Fixes the lens for maximum subject magnification (1/3x) with a minimum focusing distance of 1.47 ft. (17.7 inches), for optimum sharpness with close-ups.

Portrait
Zooms the lens automatically when the shutter-release button is pressed partway down, to provide a 1/40x magnification.

Night Portrait
This mode is ideal for photographing a person in front of an illuminated night scene or at sunset. It sets the flash to manual fill with selectable red-eye reduction and allows a maximum shutter speed of 1 second, to balance the flash illumination on the subject with the ambient light in the background. Because of the slow shutter speed, a tripod is recommended to prevent blurring caused by hand-held camera shake.

Spot Metering
Lets the photographer bias the exposure for a small area of the scene by concentrating the metering into the viewfinder’s spot metering circle, to read 7.5mm (5%) of the image frame.

Multi-Function Retractable Flash

When the Supreme EX DATE is turned on, the built-in flash pops up, ready for use. When the camera is turned off, the flash retracts completely into the camera body. The flash has four modes: full auto, full auto with red-eye reduction, manual fill, and cancel. By pressing the flash mode button successively, the flash modes change as listed. Because the flash pops up out of the camera, it lessens the chance of the flash being accidentally blocked by the user’s finger.

Automatic Soft Flash
Conventional lens-shutter cameras always fire a full flash burst with each flash exposure. Unfortunately, this could result in an overexposed subject if the subject is too close to the camera. To prevent a close subject from being overexposed and "washed out", the Freedom Zoom Supreme EX DATE uses flash intensity control circuitry which automatically sets a softer flash for close-ups. This same circuitry also controls the intensity of the red-eye reduction pre-flash burst.

Red-Eye Reduction
To reduce the common red-eye effect caused by the flash reflecting off the inside of the subject’s pupils, the camera fires a short flash burst to close down the subject’s pupils before the exposure flash is fired and the picture is taken.

Continuous Film Advance
For action-catching sequences, the Freedom Zoom Supreme EX DATE can be set to advance the film at approximately 1 frame every 2 seconds (without flash) for as long as the shutter-release button is held all the way down.

Self-Timer
The 10-second self-timer lets the user set up the shot and appear in the photo. The camera’s self-timer lamp blinks with increasing speed to signal countdown.

Selectable Date/Time Imprinting
The Freedom Zoom Supreme EX DATE imprints the date or time right onto each photo, when desired. Data imprinting is very useful for cataloging photographs or keeping photo records of important events such as birthdays, weddings, graduations, etc. The Supreme EX DATE uses a front-imprinting data module, thereby eliminating the thick back cover required by conventional data back cameras.
