The Song

He was a song that I had forgotten
how to sing...
a melody that rends the heart
to the breaking point,
and then silently backs away...

He was a smile that I needed to feel,
a touch that I needed to share...
a quiet whisper of contentment that
drew me in and quieted my insecurities.

He was the wall of strength I wanted
to lean up against and take comfort
an extra shoulder for the burden of life-
someone to share my everythings with.

He was a dream that I woke from too soon,
I had barely fallen into sleep
and was already grasping at the memories,
trying to hold them between my fingers

But seasons change,
already the first snow has fallen,
and I will learn new songs,
and dream new dreams,
but I will never forget
the pain of
awakening.
