I became interested in Passiflora soon after giving my troop Butterflies and when trying to germinate the passiflora seeds found that the process can take months.  I started germinating some seeds in the beginning of August and 3 months later, some still haven't germinated. I joined the Passiflora society and recieved lots more seeds and cuttings.  Luckily I have been able to root the cuttings (well some of them) but the seeds are so hard. To date I have around 8 different cultivars out of 500+
Last year a sister leader gave me a Celadine Plumeria.  I loved the smell of it and put it in a big pot outside my patio and then continued with my Butterfly program.  HOWEVER, in August, I stumbled across a website that had Frangipani (Plumeria) photos and I found many other ones that I absolutely wanted to have.  I had no idea that they didn't come in only white and yellow.  Then a local Frangipani farm was going out of business and it was that point that my collection went from 1 to about 40 in about 2 weeks  :)  Then I got seeds which germinated within three days (HUGE difference than the passifloras) and will probably take just as long to bloom as the passi's for the first time (within 8 months to 3 years depending on the type).  This is exciting to know that from a plant, a seed pod forms (sometimes) and plants from those seeds are not true to its parentage.  I could have a diamond mine outside with all these babies I have and won't know for a few years.  This is exciting!
For a few years, we as a troop have talked about a troop crest and assumed it would be a Butterfly for the Cadette troop.  Now as the girls love the color purple, I thought a troop flower would be awesome and be used as a troop crest for the Brownies.  This is a photo I borrowed from Lopaka of a beautiful Plumeria called a Purple Jack.

Once we have our own flower, I will gladly replace the above photo.  Since my girls love the color purple and we spend the past few years playing with Butterflies and Butterfly plants which are very hard to germinate, I thought this would be a great change.  Shane Robichaux (from Lafayette, LA) from Plumeria Addiction has donated to our troop a large Purple Jack Plumeria as well as seeds that we can do programs with.  As we are in November now, we could probably germinate the seeds on a heat mat but I am thinking we may wait until the spring so the girls can each take their seeds home and germinate their seeds where they can watch them grow daily as we meet only every 2 weeks.  Keep watching for new pictures as we do programs with the girls and our PJ grows!!
