When Herbert Marquardt died in March 2004, his children found a large box of old photographs that once belonged to his wife Jean. Upon inspection, they were Jean's ancestors: Carmichaels, Sleggs, and Darlings. Diane, Jeanne, Linda and Jim had a terrific time poring over the photographs, looking for family resemblances and exclaiming over the clothing, facial expressions and stiff poses.
When I saw the photographs, I immediately offered to organize and preserve them in a scrapbook. I have enjoyed myself immensely, and have been able to create a fairly leafy family tree after looking at Federal and New York State Census Records and searching Ancestry.com. Since this website began, there have been flurries of emails between all of the Carmichael and Marquardt cousins with new information, recollections and photos added frequently.
I decided to publish my findings online in the hopes that I can help other people researching the Marquardts, Carmichaels, Sleggs and Darlings (as well as the other family tree offshoots). Please feel free to contact me via email if you have any additional information to provide.
