Communication Skills are Important
Communication skills in the field of Computer Programming are very important. When working through problem solving and critical thinking that is associated with computers, communication skills are desirable. Some of the information Ms. Rachel gave me was the insight on some of the rigorous activity that goes with becoming a programmer.
She is one of my programming professors at Thomas Nelson Community College. Rachel has a full time job as a programmer during the day; she is my instructor for Visual Basic and C++ at night. On Oct. 29th, Ms. Rachel describes the importance of communication skills of a programmer. Rachel said,  "If you don't  have good communication skills it will make  a programmers job much harder."
As a programmer, the use of the computer is the most important piece of equipment that will be used to complete programming jobs. Computers are how a programmers function. Ms Rachel told me that all of her work is prepared on the computer. She said, "That she is constantly e-mailing colleagues about diverse programs that have been developed." There is a need for programmers to communicate with each via internet or websites, so that when a problem arrives they will have each other to help offer some opinion for a fix. There are other times when two or more programmers may be working on the same project at the same time and there will be a need to have some sort of communication between them.
Rachel also said, "That listening skills are needed to produce a good program for an individual or a company." When you are developing a program for a company or individual, they will tell you what they want and how they want the program to work. Sometimes, it is not easy to get exactly what a customer wants, so at some point there has to be some compromise. Listening is so important that the slightest misunderstanding will throw the whole program off, or the development of the program will be incorrect.
Upon completing a project for a client, it is important to illustrate it to the boss or a team of co-workers first. As a team leader, making the presentation to the client or individual to whom the program is going to work for is part of the job. If the customer or customers are not pleased with the final project, it is up to the team leader to go back to the drawing board. With the help of the team, we will try to go back and work out what ever problem there is with the program.
Reading and Researching play a key part in programming. Programs are changing every day and it is up to the programmer to stay informed of the new software. She said, "Most of her reading and research is done over the internet and in books specialization in computer programs." She said that, "The programming field is changing so rapidly, that sometimes information is not reaching the books or stores in time to do the proper research." When released, a book about programming is all ready out dated. Ms. Rachel is always on the computer and working trying to stay updated on the new programming information coming out. It is imperative that the programmer find the time to research and read as much material as they can to stay competitive in the programming field.
Ms. Rachel is constantly working on a project at work for people who need to learn how to read and write. It is basically for people who do not speak very good English. This program will also allow the user to read, hear the enunciation of the word, and the sentence. The programs have the ability to repeat a word if it is misunderstood. She has found that even with the project that is posted on the website, there is always a reason why a programmer has to go back in the website and make some changes. Programming software changes at a blink of an eye. It is most important for programmers to do a lot of reading and research. One of the projects she is working on is called  VILLA. It is always changing, so what you see on the site today might not be the same thing tomorrow.
Communication as a whole is vital to life itself. Without the ability to communicate with each other or our colleagues,  the work environment would be non functional. There are many levels of communication some higher and some lower. What ever level of communication skill one may be at, it is important to develop it and expand it. Increasing your communication skills will make a more marketable result.
