Descendants of Peter Delo

Notes

1321. Michael James Delo

I am currently in my fourth semester at Penn State. I was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on February 12, 1984. However, I soon moved to the town of Marlton, in Southern New Jersey, were I grew up and my family still lives. Growing up in suburbia, I was an hour’s drive from my family’s summer home in Ocean City, NJ, and only a fifteen minute drive to Philadelphia, the city which I consider my ‘regional’ home, and the destination of many of my travels. While much of my mom’s family live in a neighboring town in South Jersey, visits throughout the state of Pennsylvania to the various homes of my dad’s family, as well as many trips to my parents’ alma mater of Penn State as a child have made me very familiar with the geography of Pennsylvania. I am now a student in the College of Education majoring in Secondary Education with an option in Citizenship Education. I am also double- minoring in History and Political Science within the College of the Liberal Arts. When I graduate, I hope and expect to find a job teaching history in a local high school. However, after some time teaching, I have plans to return to Penn State and pursue either my doctorate in Education Administration, or possibly attend law school and achieve some sort of degree in politics. My long- term career aspirations at this point lead in two different directions. Either I will become a Washington lawmaker, or I will be a High School principal or other education administration official, such as a superintendent. I am taking this course primarily to fulfill a requirement for my teaching option, however, with all the traveling I did growing up, I have always been interested in maps, and thought this course could teach me all I wanted to know about cartography. If I could sum up my life philosophy in one line, it would be “don’t take life too seriously, or you’ll never get out alive”.

Cherokee graduate Michael Delo loses his battle against cancer

EVESHAM — Michael Delo always wanted to be a teacher.

The 23-year-old Evesham resident's life was cut short this week and he never had the opportunity to lead his own class, but family members and friends said he's been teaching them for years.

They said the Penn State University student taught them about love, courage and, most of all, laughter during the most trying times of his life.

“He taught us life lessons,” family friend Debbie Verner said.

Delo died Tuesday morning from complications of hepatosplenic T-cell lymphoma, a rare form of cancer.

Delo hoped for a bone marrow transplant, but lost his battle before one could be done. Family and friends organized several fund-raisers, with the more than $33,000 raised given to the National Marrow Donor Program to test and register potential donors.

In April, nearly 500 people were added to the national registry during a special event held at Cherokee High School.

“He battled this horrific disease and never once did he say "Why me?' He never wanted anyone to feel bad or sad for him. He was the most courageous person I've ever known,” Verner said.

The 2002 Cherokee graduate had been battling the disease since last November.

Through it all, Delo's loved ones said he was the one who kept them going.

“During his illness, he was amazing — he kept positive the entire time,” Delo's aunt, Cheri Drea, said. “He was a caring, witty, honest, selfless person. He had this dry sense of humor and would make you smile when you least expected it.”

Over the years, Delo worked as a counselor for the Evesham Recreation Day Camp and Evesham Childcare Program.

At Penn State, Delo was inducted into the university's chapter of the Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society and was a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. In addition, he was the “eminent commander” of his fraternity, Sigma Nu. He was pursuing degrees in secondary education and political science.

While Delo was as passionate as any Penn State fan, Drea said what he loved most was his family and friends.

“He adored his family,” Drea said. “When he was with his family, that's when he felt the happiest and most comfortable.”

Longtime friend Christina Dombrowski said Delo was just a “fun-loving great guy who always had a smile on his face.

“Throughout this whole thing, he never saw it as a problem,” Dombrowski said. “He made me realize you have to be strong. He's my hero. He changed so many people's lives.”

Drea said it was sad that her nephew couldn't realize all of his dreams.

“He could have changed the world,” she said. “He just had that something in him that everyone loved. We will never stop missing him.”
