Raymond F. Delo of Tappan, a former Orangetown town clerk died yesterday at Nyack Hospital. He was 58.
Mr. Delo was a longtime Orangetown official, who first became a building inspector in 1957 while also serving as clerk of the town Architecture and Community Appearance Board of Review.
He was appointed Orangetown town clerk in 1966, following the death of Bernard Valligny.
Mr. Delo went on to win election to five full terms on his own and proved to be popular with the voters. In the 1973 and 1975 elections, he secured more votes than anybody else on the town GOP ticket.
Mr. Delo was known for his collection of elephants, the symbol of the Republican Party. But it was differences with party. officials that prompted him to not seek re-election 12 years ago.
After his retirement from the town clerk's post, he worked in the town assessor's office.
"Our' paths used to cross frequently," said Orangetown Supervisor Joseph Colello. "The only thing you can say about Ray Delo is that he was a people person, a real nice guy. If he had a job to do, he did it well, or he didn't tackle it at all."
Colello said he would recommend that Monday's Orangetown Town Board meeting be canceled in Mr. Delo's memory.
Mr. Delo was born in Piermont Jan. 17, 1930, to Walter and Anna Trubiroha.
A lifelong Rockland resident, he graduated from Tappan Zee High School and later became an architect.
A Korean War Army veteran, he was a former partner of the Walter Delo & Sons building firm.
A bachelor, he was a member of the Carpenters Union Local 964 and was a member of John M. Perry American Legion Post 1044 in Sparkill. He was past president of the Orangetown Rotary.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. John's Church, Piermont. An American Legion service will be held at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Stevenson Funeral Home, 790 Piermont Ave., Piermont.
Burial will follow at Rockland Cemetery, Sparkill.
