next day's entry
Hi There! Finally made it to the internet cafe again. Still in Morelia, of course. I guess I should fill in as to what Ive been doing here.
I think I already said, we got here on Thursday. It is an adorable town- very pretty, very clean, lots of parks- it looks better than a lot of cities Ive seen in the U.S. It is actually bigger than Cuernavaca, but feels somewhat suburban. Yesterday we took a trip downtown. It is very close by the house and easy to get to. The streets here are very well organized- in perfect square designs, so it isnt easy to get lost. Anyhow, the downtown is beautiful! There are a lot of Catholic churches here. Andre and I went into one and it was gorgeous! There are many others here as well.
Let me back up a little. On Saturday we went to a nearby touristy place/ town near here. It is called Janitzio. It was so cool! It is about an hour away from Morelia and is an island in the middle of this big lake. The lake actually touches several towns. Anyhow, you come to this town- I cant recall the name, but will ask Claudia, and you take a little transport boat to the island. On the island is the town of Janitzio. It was soo cool! There are basically lots of crafts and things that the people sell on this island. There is seafood and music. You start walking up this path and as you keep walking, you encounter lots of souveniers and whatnots at excellent prices. Anyhow, eventually, at the top, is this monument of Janitzio, which from a distance resembles the statue of liberty. You can climb up it and on the way up is a museum with beautiful drawings on the wall. At the top, you can look out over the lake. It is too neat. Also, the monument is surrounded by a park at the top, so you can walk around that, too. In the park, I got to see these kids doing this dance here called "La Danza de los Viejos" I beleive. In English- the dance of the old people. Anyhow, it is very cute and I tried to buy the music but ended up getting something else. Anyhow, the whole place was really cool.
One of the trademaks of the island are these little fish that the fishermen catch. People fry them and you see them being sold all over the island. Andre got me to try one. I was scared! You just eat the whole thing- eyes and all! I ate two! One was fried and the other was barbecue or something. Yuck! No- it actually didnt taste bad- its just more the idea of eating a whole fish and especially eating the eyes. I would eat it again, I think! They actually tasted pretty decent.
On Sunday we went to church here- a Catholic church. I enjoyed the experience, just because Ive always wanted to go to one. However, now I know that I am not missing much! I apologize to anyone who might be Catholic and reading this, but I just thought it was so boring! Im not picking on the faith, though, just the way it is carried out! I am glad I went, though. Something strange happened there, though. I almost passed out in the church- twice. The first time I left and went and sat down before it got too bad. The second time, I waited a while longer and almost passed out. I have passed out before and remember what it was like. I started hearing these bells and got really hot. I was scared. Claudia came and helped me and I sat in this room. I didnt finish the church service. I dont know what happed, because it wasnt too hot in there, like it is in Centro Christiano in Cuernavaca. I started feeling sick there, but I thought it was because of the heat. I need to figure out whats going on because lately I have had a slight sore throat for about 5 days. It is not very sore- just slightly and the fact that it is lingering around makes me suspicious. I keep waiting to either get a cold or something, but nothing happens. I dont know. Maybe I have mono. Well have to see what happens.
Today we went to the zoo. I am running out of space, though, so in an effort to keep these entries to a reasonable size, I will talk about the zoo tomorrow!
