next day's entry
Not too much to say today, really. I only had my one literature class and it was half torture. It really isnt that bad, just seems to be the longest hour and a half of my life. I found out good news yesterday, and it was right on time, too. My Mexican Culture class teacher is leaving for an archeological assignment and we are getting a new teacher! This was so strange because just this weekend I was thinking about how much I hate that class! I was so excited about Mexican culture and learning about it, but the class has been such a disappointment. And the teacher is a nice lady, too (I know Im not supposed to start a sentence with "and," but it sounds good in this case). Anyhow, the teacher is nice but she is an archeologist and that seems to be all we ever concentrate on- the ancient and indigenous aspect of Mexico. While I find this interesting, it would be really nice if we could get into the current times. The new teacher is a man and is also an archeologist, but maybe he will be better. The old teacher also graded us on material that we had never learned, and I think that is one of the absolute, most horrible things that a teacher can do. I know it is mean, but I was so happy to learn about this. It couldnt have come at a better time because I am so sick of work right now. I really am. Not only that, but I was dreading the next few tests for this class, just because I wasnt sure what to expect. I was just thinking about how much I disliked that class the other day.
Yesterday was interesting, though. We had a guy come speak to us about natural medicines. There are people here who practice that and are supposed to be really good at curing things naturally. Some even use prayer and herbs. Some people use magic, but this is not a part of the natural medicines- this is simply magic.
A friend of mine got a really bad throat infection. He had a sore throat one day and then the next day was aching all over his body. He could hardly crawl out of bed. The next day, he went to the doctor, got antibiotics, came home and looked in his throat and almost fainted. His tonsils were huge and had infection growing on the infection. Sorry for the details. Anyhow, the doctor told him that with the heat and dry wind blowing around before the rainy season, a lot of people are getting respiratory and thoat problems because theyre breathing in all the microorganisms from the trash, dogs, etc... Thankfully, my throat hasnt gotten to that degree, but it is still sore/swollen. Another friend of mine told me that it sounded like my other friend had some infection, that comes from mosquitoes. I cant recall the name, but I had never heard of it. It sounded pretty scary. I also have about 5 mosquito bites on me. Claudia brought something into my room last night for the mosquitoes- some kind of rope or something. The unfortunate thing is that I have to sleep with the window open because it is so hot now. Theres a screen, but Ive seen a higher frequency of bugs in my room when the windows open, so I know that they get in.
Another friend of mine got bitten 5 times by a scorpion yesterday. It was biting him in his pants and he didnt know what it was. So he took off his pants and opened them up and it crawled out and bit him on the hand twice. They took him to the hospital and he is in a lot of pain today. Talk about horrible. Now, Im going to be paranoid and checking everything before I get dressed. Homework, heat, particles in the air, scorpions...I think its time to go home!
