Where to stay
If your traveling alone or with friends, you can stay at youth hostels. There are usualy no age restrictions and anyone can stay from 20 years old to 80 years old.
These are usualy the cheepest places to stay, usualy no more than $40 a night, and some as low as $10 a night. As with anything, you get what you pay for, so call and ask what they have before you book your reservations. If your thinking of cooking most of your meals, call and make sure they have a kitchen. Also, ask about the neighborhood it's in. Often a really cheep place to stay with everything you need and want will be in a neighborhood you wouldn't want to walk around in at night, or in the day time for that mater.
Here are a few hosteling companies and web sites.

In general:
Hosteling International (Require a hostel card and membership)
Student Universe- Hostels
Hostels.com

Knowing what other people thought about a hostel can be just as important as how much it costs. You get a first hand account instead of a managers oppinion.

European Hostel Reviews
Hostel Reviews- with Australia and Pasific links

These are only a few, so check the web for more listings.
