"The devil incarnate, or a misunderstood man?"
Cliff Richard as Heathcliff from the musical "Heathcliff"
HEATHCLIFF
Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights - the classic Gothic novel. People either love it or hate it. I love it. And I love Heathcliff. Not Catherine (whiny b***h), not Cathy (spoiled brat), not Edgar (weak and whiny), not Linton (sickly, whiny and weak), not Hindley (drunken waste) and not even Hareton - to he isn't as bad as the rest. But Heathcliff is rugged, intelligent, dark, moody and...and...famed for loving as violently as he hates. He gets revenge. He destroys people - a family - his love and himself...but he still dies "happy". Talk about a total anti-hero...
Mr. Heathcliff sat at a table, turning over some papers in his pocket-book; but he rose when I appeared, asked me how I did, quite friendly, and offered me a chair. He was the only thing there that seemed decent, and I thought he never looked better...
(Nelly Dean)
You know as well as I do, that for every thought she spends on Linton, she spends a thousand on me! At a most miserable period of my life, I had a notion of the kind, it haunted me on my return to the neighbourhood, last summer, but only her own assurance could make me admit the horrible idea again. And then, Linton would be nothing, nor Hindley, nor all the dreams that ever I dreamt. Two words would comprehend my future - death and hell - existence, after losing her, would be hell.
