Kumuthini"s departure from mavilithurai was delayed upto 7.00 am; because two members of boat crew reluctant to join the work. then kumuthini starts with 78 passangers towards Kurikadduvan. ( sheduled time of departure s 6.00 am, curfew on sea starts on 10.00am )

At two miles south of Nainativu, speedboat with six person,block the journey. on the speedboat, 'the man with gun who usually check the passangers at nainativu'-vihara jetty. three in blue navy uniforms, others in civil.
USUALLY SRILANKAN NAVY CHECK PASSANGERS AT NAINATIVU BUDDA VIHARA-JETTY. ON 15MAY1985, UNUSUALLY THIS GROUP OF SIX, STOP THE BOAT IN MID SEA AND Said that GOING TO SEARCH THE BOAT.

Everyone (include crews) were ordered to go in to front cabin. within the front cabin passangers asked to hold out thier identity cards and shout their names. this order make very noisy situation and noone what's going on outside the front cabin.
two men in navy uniform guard the both gates of first cabin, call one by one thro one gate and send them into rear cabin. when the passanger step down the rear cabin he was attacked by clubs, axes, knives by killer group stationed in the cabin
one baby under 1year old,(baby of Ms.V.annaluxumy) had three stab injury in the chest.
when Karthikesu's turn comes to step out the first cabin; he realise something going wrong at rear and jump into the sea start s to swim. but he immediatly shot dead and his body found at the shore of Analitivu,next day.

After finishing the massacre for 2hours at sea, killer squad return to Nainativu navy camp. Kumuthini was left alone inthe mid sea with her dead &semi conscious passangers.

passanger who regaining consciousness, knows what happened, they fly a white Verti as flag to call a help. when Pungudutivu poeple show the kumunthini with white flag,they go into the sea and bring the Kumuthini to Kurikadduvan jetty even though sea cuefew still exist
