Introduction

My ROSE Family Research begins with Ellen Victoria ROSE (b. 1869 in Gray, NC). She marries J.B. HALL (b. 1875 Halls Mill, Wilkes, NC) on May 30, 1893 probably in North Carolina. Ellen's death certificate lists William ROSE and Mary HICKS as her parents.

Below are all references and notes I have gathered to date on the several ROSE families of Ashe, Surry, Wilkes and Yadkin Counties, NC.

1794-1799 Emanuel ROSE Estate

Emanuel ROSE will, dated 28 Aug 1794, filed May term 1796. 6 Feb 1799 wife Mary (reportedly HAMPTON) relinquished her right to administer the estate - she had married John HALL, Sr.

In his will he named his wife and five daughters:

Wife - Mary
Dau1 - Kizziah (who later married Richard BAUGUESS, the elder, his 2nd wife)
Dau2 - Mary HOLLOWAY (wife of John)
Dau3 - Sary (who married a SERENGER and died in Smythe Co., VA 1854)
Dau4 - Elizabeth (who married a SPARKS and went to TX)
Dau5 - Sussana (no further information)
1799 Emanuel ROSE Property Sale

Joseph ROSE witnessed when Mary (widow of Emanuel ROSE) sold a piece of Emanuel's property. No indication of the relationship between the two. If he were a son of Emanuel's by a previous marriage, he might have already had his share.

1799 Sary ROSE, daughter of Emanuel ROSE

Sary ROSE, daughter of Emmanuel and Mary Hampton ROSE, first married Joseph ROSS, Wilkes Co. NC.  They had two sons, Stephen b abt 1800 and William b abt 1802.  Joseph ROSS died between 1802 and 1810.  Sary then married William SURGENOR and they moved into Grayson Co. VA.  Sary and William moved over into Smyth Co. about 1830.  Sary's death is listed as 3/14/1855 in the Smyth Co. death register. Information provided by her daughter, Doris Brown.

The men from Ashe County who served in the War of 1812 served in the 1st and 2nd Companies, of 5th North Carolina Militia Regiment (Ashe County). A total of 58 men are thought to have served in the 1st Company, but only 30 men were found to have served in the 2nd Company.

FUNERAL FOR MRS. A. F. ROSE, HELD HERE WEDNESDAY - HAD RECENTLY RETURNED HERE AFTER SPENDING THE WINTER IN WINSTON

The funeral servie for Mrs. Cornelia Rose, 85, who died in the Ashe Memrial Hospital Tuesday witha heart condition, was held at the West Jefferson Methodist Church Wednesday morning with Rev. Wilson Nesbitt officiating. Burial will follow in the West Jefferson cemetery.

Mrs. Rose is survived by her husband, A. F. Rose; 2 sons, Claude Rose, Winston-Salem; Fred Rose, Ashe county; 7 daughters, Mrs. J. F. Carr, Philadelphia; Mrs. Virginia Ritterhusch, Mrs. Alec Sells, both of Baltimore, Maryland; Mrs. N. C. Norgen, Seattle, Wash.; Mrs. Gwen Lyles, West Jefferson; Mrs. Tony Anthony, Walkertown, Pa.; Mrs. C. G. Taylor, Cleveland, Ohio. Twenty grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. Rose celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary in Winston-Salem last month. For the past several years they have been spending the winter months in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Rose returned last week to their home here.

She was on of West Jefferson's pioneer citizens as she and her husband came to the town in the early days of 1916 and buitl one of the first homes here.

ALEC ROSE DIES IN WINSTON ~ TO BE BURIED TODAY
WAS A FORMER JP IN WEST JEFFFERSON, MEMBER OF MASONIC LODGE HERE

One of West Jefferson's oldest and prominent citizens, Alec Rose, died Monday of a heart attack at the home of a son, Claude Rose, where he had been making his home.

Mr. Rose was a justice of the peace in West Jefferson for more than 34 years and was a carpenter and farmer. He was also a member of the West Jefferson Methodist Church and a member of the Masonic Lodge.

He was married to the former Mis Cornelia Bare, who preceded him in death.
