his nails were beginning to bleed at the strain of scrabbling at the sides.
he felt his arms losing their strength, but
desperation pushed him on. nevertheless, it felt like
an impossible task to him.
the man had been trapped in that ditch for five days, and he barely
survived on the water that seeped in when it rained. like
all things on earth, the rain brought its disadvantages too. his
feet were soggy, and his morale dampened severely by the very source of his
sustenance.
through those five days, many passed him by. the ditch
he was in was deep, but just barely noticeable by anyone who cared to look
closely. he sadly hadn’t been one of the discerning
ones, and had fallen in headlong. awoken from his
stupor, he’d realised he was trapped inside.
first came this girl who he thought would be able to save him. his hoarse voice beckoned desperately for help, but she paid
no heed to his cries. his heart sank with her walking
away. others passed him by, but his cries, as they did
not reach the girl, did not reach them.
over the course of the next few days, the
man saw the girl many more times, yet every time he reached out to her, he was
either ignored, or got sand in his face, kicked in inadvertently by the girl. still, the sight of the girl encouraged him, since he
believed she was the only one who would be able to help him out of the pit.
just as his energy was waning on the fifth day, and he felt his breath
waning, he thought he saw the familiar outline of the girl. maybe she has returned to help this time, he thought. and
true. it was her. and what’s
more, she was walking towards him. then he saw
something that made his heart sink. to the bottom of
the pit.
in the arms of the man next to her, they stopped at the edge of the pit he
was in.
and proceeded to kick the sand into the hole, oblivious to the struggling
cries of the man.
he breathed his last.
