Absolute Power
Authors Notes
Here are a few things that I was thinking of when I wrote each of the Absolute Power series.
Season 1 |
I often thought of what I would wish for if I had a
Genie. I was out of work at this point and a little frustrated
with my life in general. I had just started on the sequels to
Morphite and was stuck. I wrote this story to get it out of my
head. I didn't know if it would go anywhere.
Someone pointed out to me the awkward first to third person narrative. I usually don't like to rewrite after sending it out, but they were right. I changed the transition. |
Another criticism was that there was no conflict in the
first story. I disagree (I think the conflict was internal), but I
could use a really evil bad guy. Casper was born. Stan is
also introduced, a scene with an awful tragedy. Grief isn't
logical.
I don't believe anyone thinks of themselves as evil. Casper needed motivation. He's really old, really rich, and doesn't want to die. Above that he has an ego the size of the planet. I also needed a tie-in, a quest. How about getting stuck as a woman? It fits a TG theme and remains one of the ultimate goals of the protagonist. They aren't just wandering around aimlessly. |
I finally get to turn this into a road story.
People are pursuing a goal and are ultimately changed by the
pursuit. We see that both sides are going about their searches in
similar manners and so will ultimately bump into each other.
Our heroes learn that they should cover their tracks a bit (but not very well). Stan starts his path to redemption, but is still trapped by circumstance and fear. |
I wanted to show that a story can be in two parts and
still be two complete stories. Also a major cliff- hanger.
Larry (Sarah) learns that there are limits to power. Friendship can also
save lives. People can be redeemed.
Casper has a couple ideas on how to hang out a little longer and Robert finally reveals his identity. |
Absolute Power 5 - Crusade (Part 2)(Season Ender) |
Primarily summing up the season. I wanted to show that trust and redemption sometimes have to be proven. Sacrifice for your friends (or former enemies) is a great thing. |
Season 2 |
This one was hard. I wanted to do a prequel showing
the first two wishes. What would motivate Larry to wish for these
powers?
I got inspiration from real life. I lost a member of my family. This story was mostly written in grief. There isn't a lot of action in this one. I just wasn't up for writing it and I think it would have ruined the story. |
I wanted to lighten things up a little bit so I added in a few (hopefully) comic moments. I cringed a little when I added the costume but it's use will be made apparent later. |
The main quest of Debby and Sarah is to find a Djinn and
get some answers. So far they have only come across vague hints as
to how to go about it. Now there is a race and an identifiable
object.
Really this story was the beginning of the final story arc for the season. But I felt the lamp was not stakes enough for a vendetta. I resorted back to hostages. And our hero does something really, really wrong. |
Our hero(ine) is pissed and frustrated. Her friends
are not even sure of her motives anymore.
In this story absolute nothing goes right. All of Sarah's friends are lost and she is powerless to do anything about it. I wanted to show how vindictive Casper could be when given the wishes of a Genie. But I also wanted to put an obstacle in his way, Robert gets to wish too |
With the wording of the original wish I felt that this
title was just waiting to be used.
Originally this was going to be the final story of the season but it grew too big for my tastes. So I broke it in half. Questions are answered, friends are reunited, and nothing is resolved. |
How did Casper come back, exactly? His mind was
copied and inserted into Molly's head. So...is it really Casper?
Or is it Molly?
I wanted to show that the Whisperer's power was more than just saying a phrase. In the mind of the one wielding the power what ever is going to be changed has to be a problem or infirmity. If you have the wrong mind set then it doesn't work. Larry learned how to hurt people by accident. Robert is not really even aware of the power yet. |
Season 3 |
Sarah has to pay for her crime so she is mainly absent
for this one.
I wanted to delve deeper into the motivations and psyche's of both sides of things. Why was Casper so cruel? Why did Monty stick around? How could Monty be a clone of Casper and be so different? How does Freddy react to her rape? What is Z getting out of this? |
