Chapter 24: Qulifying for the Daytona 500/The Onion Ring Game
They all went to their motor coaches and got ready for qualifying. They then meet each other in the garage.
�Thanks for everything and good luck in qualifying,� Kevin says.
�Hey, that�s what teammates are for,� Robby says. �Now, good luck to you also.�
�Ok,� Jr says. �Lets do it and after qualifying, we can go out for lunch.�
They all went to see their cars and were all happy about going out for lunch. Then they got into their cars. They all waited inline till it was their turn to go out and qualify. Jr went out 3rd and qualified 1st. Then it was Kevin�s turn. He went to do his run and he qualified 2nd right behind Jr. when he got back to the pits, it was Robby�s turn. Robby went out and ended 3rd, right behind Jr and Kevin. Then it was Mikey�s turn. After he got back to the pits, he ended up in 3rd. So far the top 4 were Jr, Kevin, Mikey, Robby but everyone knew that the top 2 positions were the only positions locked in on Sunday. When they got back to the garage, they went to their trailer and got dressed and then they headed out to lunch but they didn�t know where to go for lunch.
�Now�we all love that onion ring game,� Kevin comments. �Instead of doing in on Thursday, lets do it now. How bout we go to Sonics?�
�Sure,� Mikey, Jr and, Robby.
�Then what are we waiting for,� Kevin says.
They all leave the track to go to Sonics. When they get to Sonics, they all go sit at a table.
�I am glad that we went out for lunch,� Robby says. �I think I am ready to order.�
�I am too but I know something,� Kevin says. �Don�t fill my belly to full so we can do the contest.�
So, when Jr and Mikey were ready to order, they ordered their food. Michael was just sitting there and out of the corner of his eye, he saw Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon hiding outside Sonics. Michael whispers to Robby and lets him know that he saw Jimmie and Jeff hiding outside sonics. Robby whispered the message to Dale Jr and Kevin.
Then they got their food and then left Sonics and Kevin let the guys know, �We can do the onion ring game when we get back to my trailer.�
�Guys, come here,� Mikey calls out. �We are going to take a smart approach and please bare with me. We are going to split so then its hard to get us all in case. Jr and me will go the left way. Robby and Kevin, take the right way.�
Everyone agrees with Mikey and then they all leave Sonics.
�Dumb that�left,� Jr yells which everyone knew Jr was saying Jimmie and Jeff are on the left side.
Jimmie & Jeff follow Jr and Mikey.
�Run,� Mikey yells.
Jr and Mikey start to run; Jimmie and Jeff then start to also.
�M + J = split,� Mikey called out next.
Mikey and Jr split and hide somewhere. Jimmie and Jeff couldn�t find Jr or Mikey.
After they left, Mikey says, �Jr, where are you hiding?�
�I am hiding behind this 1978 Monte Carlo,� replies Jr.
�Great�I�m hiding behind a tree,� Mikey says.
�Ok,� Jr says. �I think they are gone�I will meet you near Sonics.�
�Ya sure,� Mikey responds. �Um, lets meet at the front door. Hey Robby and Kevin, where are you guys and are those two near you?�
�We are back at Kevin�s trailer,� Robby answers. �They are not near us Mikey.�
�Alrighty,� Mikey says. �I�m meeting Jr at the Sonic front door and then heading there. Now, don�t start the contest without us.�
�Ok,� Robby says.
Jr and Mikey meet up at Sonics and then start heading back to the track and to Kevin�s trailer. When they get to the track and after no sight of Jimmie or Jeff�they head over to Kevin�s trailer. Kevin opens the door and lets them in.
�Is everything ok with you guys?� Robby asks.
�Yea, we had the perfect plan,� Mikey starts. �We decided to split and hide and then meet up after they left.�
�Good idea,� Robby comments. �Ok. Lets start the game.�
Jr pulls out the first onion ring and says, �Big with a tri-oval at the front. Its gotta be Daytona.�
�Yep,� Kevin agrees.
Mikey pulls out the next onion ring and says, �Hmm�small track�Martinsville or Bristol?�
�It looks like Bristol,� Robby answers.
�Yep since Martinsville is a paper clip,� Kevin adds. �Jr and Robby have 1pt each.�
Then Kevin pulls out the next onion ring and says, �Hmmm�it looks to me like this might be Dega. It is Dega. Bigger then the Daytona onion ring. Man, all of us but Mikey have one point.
Mikey pulls out the next onion ring and says, �It is California.�
�Jr, its your turn,� Kevin says. �We all got 1pt.�
�Ok,� Jr says. He then takes out the next onion ring and says, �This looks like Pocono to me.�
�Ding dong�your right�Pocono is a triangle,� Robby says. �2pts for Jr, everyone else has 1 and its my turn.� Then Robby pulls out the next onion ring and says, �It looks a little like New Hampsure. Damn, this is a weird New Hampsure. Anybody have any other ideas or do I get a point?�
�I think it might be Dover,� Mikey adds.
�I have a idea,� Dale Jr says. �Why don�t we each put down on a piece of paper what we think it is and then show are answers to each other?�
�Good idea Jr,� Kevin agrees. Kevin gives everybody a piece of paper and a pencil that he has in the drawer. They all put what they thought on the piece of paper. �On the count of three, show your answer. One�two�three.�
Everyone shows their answer.
�There are two New Hampsure, two Dover,� Jr says. �Alright, Kevin, can you please go get that track book you have? Because what we will do now is put the onion ring on each layout of New Hampsure and Dover and see which it is close too.�
�Ok,� Kevin says.
Kevin then gets the track book out and gives it to Jr. Jr then opens the book and finds the layouts of New Hampsure and Dover. He put the onion ring once on the Dover layout and then on the New Hampsure layout.
�It looks like its Dover you guys,� Jr says.
�Yea, it does,� Kevin agrees. �Mikey put in Dover so he getes the first half of the onion ring. Who also put in Dover? Not me.�
�It was me,� Jr says.
�Alright,� Kevin says. �Mikey has 2pts, Jr has 3pts, me and Robby have one pt each and its my turn.� Kevin pulls out the next onion ring and says, �It looks like Martinsville.�
�Small, paperclip shape�Harvick gets a pt,� Robby says. �Mikey�s turn.�
Mikey then pulls out an onion ring and says, �This is a hard one. I think this might be Texas.�
�Let me see�Jr 3pts, Mikey and me 2ots and Robby has one pt.� Kevin says. �Since this is a toughie, lets compare it to the Texas layout in the book. Jr, may you do it?�
�Sure,� Jr says. Jr opens the book to the Texas layout and put the onion ring on it. �This looks like and it is Texas.�
�Mikey and Jr are tied for first with 3pts each,� Kevin says. Kevin was about to add something but two people knocked on the door. �Robby�can you check who is at the door?�
�Sure Harvick,� Robby replies. �You be in charge of the tie breaker with Mikey and Dale Jr since its only one onion ring left.�
The two people knock again. Robby went to the door to see who it is. It is Richard and Ty Norris.
�Come in Richard and Ty,� Robby instructs. They come in.
�Hi Kevin, Mikey and Jr,� Richard and Ty say.
They all say hi and go back to their tie breaker.
�This looks like Homestead,� Mikey comments.
�Let me open the book to the page,� Kevin suggests.
�Ok,� Mikey agrees.
Kevin was opening the page when the two people who they thought were Ty and Richard take off their masks and they were actually Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson.
�Not this again,� Kevin says as Jimmie�s crew comes in. Kevin turns to Jr and whispers, �Lets get out of here and go to your trailer.�
Jr whispers back to Kevin, �Wait�you never know where the rest of the Hendrick teams are. And we got to get Mikey and Robby out. Lets do codes since we do still have are walkie talkie complexe system still hooked up.�
Kevin whispers to Jr, �Good idea.�
�R, M�J trailer,� Jr says.
�K�J,� Mikey and Robby say together.
�K, how we o?� Jr asks Kevin.
�J�just get out,� Kevin responds.
�K room�NASCAR,� Mikey interrupts.
�M�lets go,� Kevin says.
