GURPS: Traveller -- The Kainari Campaign |
KainariKainari is the poor sister of the League Worlds. It has the lowest population (~ 5 x 10^6 people) and the lowest technology (TTL 8) of the league worlds. Indeed Kainari would not probably have been admitted to the league if it were not for its extensive agricultural industry. Kainari dominates the League in agricultural exports, and is at the tail end of all other measures. Kainari is also the home of Lysani Laboratories, a producer of surprisingly low cost pharmaceuticals and one of the top 10 corporations of the League. Lysani also holds title to the world of Gaddon, some 11 light-years away and off the interstellar track. Most of the population works the vast agricultural industry of the planet. Kainari is governed by a group called the "overlords", each of whom controls the production and distribution of some types of technology. The overlords gain their wealth and position by providing technology to the people in specific geographical "fiefs". Competition among the overlords for newer, more efficient technologies if fierce. Each overlord is required to provide a et amount of good and profits tot he overlord council. Those who are unable to meet these expectation can have their fiefs removed and/or having their pattens striped from them. Overlords are forbidden to act in a manner that endangers the general populace so R&D and off-planet technology are the main methods of increasing status (Spying is considered a valid form of Research). The Imperium restrictions on technological transfer and the imperium itself, is not very popular on Kainari, and the planet supports the anti-imperial factions of the League. Physically, Kainari is an unremarkable world. Wide shallow seas, low mountains, broad and slow rivers, all placid and unremarkable. Kainari could not have been designed to be less physically interesting. There is only one desert of size on the planet, which is the location of the starport ("Why waste productive land on a starport?"). The atmosphere was a standard O-N reducing, tailor-made for humanity (and most other races). Its two moons are unremarkable rock balls. There is a small settlement on the larger moon, manufacturing light gravity products and mining the moon. There are no valuable mineral deposits on the planet of any size, and limited quantities in space. Kainari starport is a common stop for free traders, with light customs and low restrictions on activities (at least in the starport area). In addition, the overlords are quite happy to hire free traders to engage in a little off-planet speculation to boost their profit margins. IN dealing with he overlords, remember that once a contract is agreed upon, it is considered inviolate and WILL be enforced in both the letter and the spirit of the contract. It is only through this principal that the cutthroat business and government of Kainari can be maintained. Think of the overlords as a set of corporations each holding a small series of monopolies in limited markets. Failure to match up to the economic standards in these markets results in the loss of the monopoly status or the loss of prime markets. When the virus came, it found Kainari hard to digest. The differing technological standards that the Technocrats had imposed upon the world saved it from the worst of the Virus. Small virus outbreaks were quickly quelled by the Technocratic Engineers. The only spot where the Virus got the upper hand was the one spot were the Technocrats did not have control - the Imperial Standard Starport. The Starpot Virus was a cunning and dangerous enemy. With interplanetary communication cut off and the intraplanetary data net compromised, it took several years for the technocrats to figure out what was going on. In the meantime, the Virus sent ships and small craft to raid the technocrats strongholds and keep them fueding. Even after the majority relized that the true enemy was "Machiavelli" (as the starport virus named itself), they could not develop a concerted plan of attack on the Starport (most of the diplomats and compromise makers were on the highport in the council section). Finally, 11 years after his arrival, four of the most powerful technocrats forced a truce upon their neighbors and began to a concerted effort to stop Machiavelli. The war dragged on for another 27 years and ended with a massive seige of the starport. Despite efforts to prevent it, the starport was massively damaged in the battles. During this time, howver, Kainari's overall tech level was pushed to 10 and parts of the planet are reaching the TL 11 benchmarks. Machiavelli is beleived to have been firmly ensconsed at TL 12. With their starport back, the Technocratic Alliance began to attempt to recontact their neighbors in the League. It was the TA that pushed much of the restructuring of the League through, and the League capitol is on Kainari. The old startown was destroyed and K-Down, the new city at the starport is much different. Gone is the familiar "frontier" setup and a modern Metal and Plastic city stand in its place. Even though much of the planet retains its free-wheeling ways, K-Down is an interstellar capitol and holds firmly to the tenets of Law and Order (LL 5 in K-Down). |
