GURPS: Traveller -- The Kainari Campaign

Kadaenen

Kadaenen was once the most productive and wealthiest agricultural planet short of Old Earth. But then, the population exploded. And Exploded again. And again. In under one hundred years, the population has risen by nearly two orders of magnitude. And Kadaenen has always spurned space habitats in favor of planet bound cities. (Kadaenen has the highest percentage of gravity and transition sickness among the league.) So all of those people are crammed together in low lying cities on one single planet. The orbital industries are long gone, destroyed by gravity intolerance and neglect. The massive farming combines that drove the planet have mostly failed between the need for more living space and the crushing demands of the huge populous. The League officially assumed control of Kadaenen five years ago, despite its policy of non-interference on internal matters.

Much of the problem stems from the planets social-political structure. The citizens had strong beliefs in government non-interference in personal matters and the predominent beleif structure called for large families that stayed together (no shipping off planet, everyone stayed home and saw to the family). Plus, the voters kept authorizing increasingly socialized medical care and non-employment care, all paid for by the vast agricultual export industry. When general disease blocking and anagathics became available (about 100 years ago), the population climbed at record rates. And the voters kept calling for more...

Currently, the planet is on the brink of a major crisis. League efforts are concentrated on distributing food evenly, but the majority of the citizens keep calling for more for themselves, trying to sustain their middle class lifestyles. League efforts to transplant the populous to orbital habitats or other planets are being blocked by the high incidence of gravity intolerance and transition sickness and the family values of the Kadaenen. Given that the average family size is 40-50 individuals, it is almost impossible to find a family that can be moved as a group, and the families are resisting being broken up.

Kadaenen is likely to become a galactic horror story in the near future. The League is not likely to be able to keep on supporting the bloated infrastructure of the planet for long. And when the league fails, starvation deaths (and plague) are likely to begin. As well as the rioting that is already reaching trouble proportions.
