The Weir

In the distant past, man was granted one of the greatest abilities it would ever know - the ability to become, body, soul, and spirit, a natural creature. When first gained, mankind thought of this as a great blessing. This ability allowed the early human cultures to survive and prosper in the years prior to (and during) the Great Elven Wars (the Chaos, Orcgate and Kinslayer Wars). However, this feeling soon changed. As mankind grew more civilized, and closer to the elven norm, they began to distrust the Weir. The intrinsic link to nature possessed by the weir caused the new human sorcerers great consternation, as their magic could neither understand or control the Weir. The very exsistance of the Weir reminded the people of thier primitive past. Eventually, the Weir were driven from human society or killed. Their existance was regulated to myths and children's stories. Wier still exist, bvut they are now scattered and hidden, living far away from human civilization and seldom intruding into the affairs of the rest of the world.

Demon Wolves and the Curse of Lycanthropy

But what of the half-man/half-beast of myth? The bloodthirsty creatures immune to normal weapons and who transfer madness with thier bite? These, too, exist, but they are not weir. They are two types of creatures with darker, sorcerous origins.

The curse of lycanthropy is a magical disease, passed from victim to victim. The curse causes a transformation into a semi-humanoid creature whose general apearance resembles a wolf. The cursed individual is driven into a potent blood frenzy and seeks only to kill. Most of the individuals so cursed have no recolections of their actions. The transformations are uncontrollable by the victim, and seem to be linked to the dark periods of the moon. The cursed individual, in beast form, is nearly immune to the bite of normal weapons, healing such wounds in mere moments. Weapons bearing enchantments or washed with silver cause wounds that do not heal as rapidly, as does magic or fire. The saliva of the lycanthrope carries in it the disease, leaving their living victims bearing the curse themselves. The disease takes about 4-6 months to manifest itself. The beast attacks with its claws and fangs, and, fortunately, seldom leaves living victims behind.

The Demon wolves are fell creatures first conjured by sorcers in the great wars. Believed to be some magical crossbreed of animal and magic. The sorcerers who created the demaon wolves did so to make guards or assassins. They somehow induced an unnatural fusion between a natural animal and a dark spirit of some sort. Demon Wolves, like the lycanthropes, are nearly immune to the bite of normal weapons. They live only to kill and destroy. But, unlike the Lycanthopic Cursed, these beasts have cunning and intelligence. They can plan and plot the destruction of their prey and take joy in evil acts. Fortunatly, these monsters are few in number, and do not breed easily (contrary to adventurers myth, the bite of a demon wolve does not confer lycanthropy or turn the bitten into a demon wolf).
